The Mighty Salvage Corvettes
This is for all you people that have already read the Prima
strategy guide and wondered if there was a better way. Well Ive
come to tell you there is. My friend and I are coming from a
fleet that currently has 2 cruisers, 7 Destroyers, 50 Frigates,
and tons of strike craft. And we still have over 10,000 resources
to spend as we please. How did we manage that? Ill tell you,
we used the most powerful weapon in the game, Salvage Corvettes.
90% of our fleet is stolen from one of the three races in the
game, all 50 frigates are Tidan. Salvage Corvettes make even the
weakest navy something to reckon with.
This is a quick over view on how to use these little guys to turn
the weapons of the enemy against them. First of all, dont
over exert your Corvettes, they do kick ass but they cant
do everything. For starters, the you cant grab the Carrier
on mission 2 and 4, no matter how many of those guys you send it
just wont switch sides. Also, you cant gab
Motherships ether, so no big plans grabbing the needle ship in
the Nebula.
Your First Run
But dont despair, nether of those ships will matter when
you get done talking all there support. First of all, you really
dont need more than one tell the end of mission 2. Then you
will need at least six (same number given by Prima). Now here is
where the strategy differs from Prima. Before you jump to Mission
3, set all your strike craft to group 1. Then set each of your
Salvage Corvettes to a different group. After you jump have your
strike craft attack in evasive on all ships, this does little
damage but does make for a good cover. Then send your first five
Corvettes and latch on to one Frigate each. This starts each
frigate into a spin, making it hard to target your Corvettes.
Then move in your last Corvette to grab one of the frigates and
continue until you get all of them. This gives you a good fleet
of Assault Frigates to start the game.
The riches of the Nebula
The next major time that Prima underestimated the Salvage
Corvette is the first and second Nebula Missions. If used
correctly, the resources you gather in the nebula will seem like
your back in the first missions. In the Prima book they talk
about the Fuel pods, but they tell you to target them so that the
swarmers are useless. Although this plan does work, you are
throwing away a large amount of money. Each Fuel pod brings in
600 resources, not something you would want to destroy. Use your
strike craft to hit the Swarmers then move your Salvage Corvettes
to grab the Fuel pods. Now the good part about this is that not
only are you stealing resources, but youre also depriving
the Swarmers of their fuel. And best of all, the swarmers hardly
ever hit the Salvage Corvettes so you should have no problem, (Another
stratagy if you feel lucky, once you have taking out the local
Fuel pods, you can grab the Swarmers as well, there is no real
economic reason for this, they only give you about 20, but if you
like fast fighters, you grab about 20 or more of these guys then
you can have a little fun for free). Repeat this strategy on the
second Nebula Mission and grab the Multi-Beam Frigates and you
will have a lot of money. WARNING: Near the end of the second
Nebula mission you will find a small group of Fuel Pods (4), keep
an eye on your salvage corvettes when you go in, each of those
helpless looking Pods carries a gun capable of destroying a
Corvette in a few shots. You might have to send more than one
wave to grab them, but dont just let them get away.
The greatest Salvage Mission
Now for the best part of the salvage corvette strategy that wont
cost you more then a few hundred. The Field Inhibitor Mission, I
think it is the Third one from the end, the enemy is defended by
a ball of Ion Frigates defending the target. At this point your
salvage teams are drooling, but it is to dangerous to go right in
and grab them one by one. And Primas solution to this is
the clocking generators, this can work, but you lose to man
Frigates when the come back trying to free their friend. The way
to solve this is simple, first you need a group of 15 Salvage
Corvettes, split them into 5 groups of three with the numbers 6
though 0. Next split your battle fleet (what ever it is) into 3
groups, place them to the left, right and front of the Mothership
(just incase someone tries to come and play with your group).
Make these groups 1, 2 and 3. Next, have a group of bombers
around 8 or 9 and assign them to group 4. Finally what ever you
do, dont send out your Collectors, you will find out later
why. Ok, you first mission is to get a few of the Frigates away
from the circle. Send your bomber to the closest Frigate in X or
Claw formation with Evasive Tactics and have them target that
first frigate. Once they have fired the first volley of bombs,
press the D button and send them back to dock with the Mothership.
Once you send them to dock, watch the frigates as the leave the
circle, there should be about 6 of them. They should stop after a
little while and hold at about 30 Kilometers. If they stop they
you have got them. Send your bombers in again and hit one of the
frigates. Then once again dock, this should make one frigate
fallow you. Move a single group of three Corvettes after him,
come in from one of his two sides, this makes it to where he has
to turn to attack, making chances for a hit less likely. Continue
the last few steps until you have taken about haft of the
Frigates from the circle, leaving you with a monstrous fleet and
the enemy is now out gunned and you a big whole to the enemy.
Now if the frigates dont stop you will have to think fast.
Move all your Corvettes to one of the sides of the line of travel
for the Frigates. Once they pasted you move the Corvettes in
behind the Frigates and grab all of them, you might loose around
3 or so, but hell you got 6 Frigates, you could lose them all and
still as long as you get the frigates you are making a bunch of
money.
If life wasnt stressful enough for you, you got to watch
for something else while your doing this. Sooner or later two
blips will show up under your Mothership. These are the Resource
Collectors for the enemy. They have no escorts so they are easy
pickings, grab them and you got an extra two Collectors or some
resources to scrap. Now the bad side of this is if they got under
you that means they have cleared out the resources for this level,
but with all the extra Frigates you get will line your pockets
quite well. But if you didnt head my advice and sent out
you Collectors, it will be one more thing you will have to worry
about, and in a mission like this more than likely at least one
of them will be killed.
How do you kill a Junkyard Dog?
You ever ask your self about that damn Super Salvage ship they
call the Junkyard Dog on the graveyard mission. They also tell
you that it is impossible to kill him, and too keep your fleet
away. Well that is a load of crap. Those are undetermined
warriors that run as soon as a blast of Ion Frigates doesnt
take out. Well it takes a little bit more then a few ships to
destroy him but it can be done. First of all fallow the strategy
from Prima. But make the fleet a group of Bombers, around 20, and
3 Missile Destroyers. Then head strait down at the objective in
Sphere Formation. Once the Junkyard dog comes your way, stop and
turn all guns on him aggressively. He more than likely will grab
one of the Destroyers, dont let this stop you, let him have
it. After a lot of firepower is punched into him, he will blow up.
But you will still have to salvage that Missile Destroyer if you
lost it. But you dont have to worry about that Dog no more.
You can take your big ships in and kill all the guns and grab all
the resources and come out way ahead, and if you really want to,
you can salvage the Scanners in the. This gives you very little
money, but it does give you some free scanners for the next
mission.
