Synopsis

Mimi, a recently unemployed 60 year old widow and her daughter, Felicia, live a humdrum life. While Felicia struggles to earn a modest living, Mimi spends her days living vicariously through the characters on her favorite soap opera: "As the Dial Turns." Their lives take a colorful turn, however, when a very pregnant Victoria Cain, Mimi's favorite character, shows up at their front door straight from Port Henry with car troubles in the midst of a blizzard. But the troubles are just beginning for the melodramatic Victoria, who has a track record of plot twists that would put Susan Lucci to shame.

Mimi is delighted to have a visit from her favorite soap opera character. After all, she's always felt a familial bond to Victoria, like an aunt would to a special niece. Felicia, however, is suspicious from the moment Victoria arrives. In this satirical and tongue-in-cheek look at soap operas, Victoria experiences practically every soap opera twist and turn imaginable, from kidnappings and murder plots to evil twins and even childbirth - all in the span of a few days, and all in the privacy of Mimi and Felicia's living room.

Does Mimi really believe that Victoria is real? Can Felicia convince her mother that Victoria is just a TV character? Will Victoria ever find her way back to Port Henry? You'll learn answers to those questions and more in "Dial."

Dial is performed on a unit set, and requires 4 actresses: 1 in her mid 20s, 2 in their 30s, and 1 in her early 60s.

Characters:

MIMI - A recently unemployed widow in her early 60s. She is a very trusting woman, who has spent most of her time since her husband died living vicariously through soap operas, especially her favorite soap opera, "As the Dial Turns." She is mother to Felicia.

FELICIA - A woman in her mid 20s who works to support herself and her mother, Mimi. She is very skeptical by nature, and wishes her mother would start living again, rather than living through soap operas.

VICTORIA - A soap opera character in her mid 30s who is melodramatic and over-the-top in her attitude and her life experiences. Everything about her says "soap opera," from her appearance, to her personal relationships, to her ways of dealing with problems.

Setting:

The present, in Mimi and Felicia’s apartment. The apartment includes (minimally) a living room and a kitchenette. In the living room is a TV, with its screen facing away from the audience.
