Kemistry for a 5-6th Grade Audience

Objectives
- Perform a 3-minute chemical demonstration to a 5th or 6th grade audience, which
serves to illustrate a concept on the topic as stated above. Your presentation
may include a single, dramatic demonstration or a pair of related
demonstrations. Emphasis must be on the understanding of the
chemistry involved in the reaction (both you and your grammar school
audience).
- Prepare
a video of the performance in front of the 5th or 6th grade audience and
post it on YoutubeTM
- Prepare a paper, which describes how your demonstration can be used to
teach the assigned topic. Your paper should include:
- a list of educational objectives that describe what the presentation
is to achieve.
- complete instructions and procedures for the safe method of doing the
demonstration.
- a list of supplies and materials.
- pertinent diagrams, and hazards and disposal methods.
- a list of relevant references.
- Present the video at the NJCO in front of the NJCO audience and respond to
questions posed by judges
Guidelines
Video & Demonstration
- This events must be completed by a team of 2-3 students.
- The video is limited to 3:00 minutes of edited video. Points will be deducted for going overtime.
- The demonstration must be performed live in front of an audience of 5th or
6th grade students (minimum 12 students) and supervised by your coach.
- The
demonstration may only utilize substances normally found (typically) found
anywhere in your home.
- Two questions following the demonstration must be posed by the audience
must be asked and answered in the video.
- The video must be a self-contained production that does not require any
introduction or explanation by a person. That is, the video must
contain appropriate introductions, captions, explanations, the
demonstration, audio, a summary and credits.
- Face shots of your audience may not be included in the video in
order to protect the privacy of your audience. However, shots of the
back of their heads as well as profile shots taken from a distance are
permitted.
- Demonstrators and coaches must observe the ACS Guidelines for
Safe Demonstrations.
- Upon your coach's approval, post the video on Youtube. The video
must be titled as follows: "(Title of Demo) - a NJCO
Demo" (example: "Salt Dissolves in Water -- a NJCO
Demo"). Email the video link to: [email protected]
by 4 pm. May 1.
Written Report & DVD
- Your written report (including formulas, diagrams, charts, etc.) may not exceed four
pages - 12 pt., single spaced. Do not include a cover page.
- All sources of information must be identified clearly (written sources as
well as a list of people who provided assistance)
- Four (4) copies of the complete report and four (4) copies of a DVD of
your video must be received by the Director of
the NJCO by the deadline indicated in the Competition
Guidelines. The reports must be clearly labeled with the school name.
If applicable, also indicate, team A or B.
- Bring one extra copy of your report and one extra copy of a DVD of your
video on the day of the event.
Presentation at NJIT on May 20
- The video will be shown in a lecture hall that seats up to
250 students.
- The video must be played from a DVD which teams will bring to NJIT
themselves. Internet services will not be available.
- NJIT will provide a projector with a 9-pin data port. You must
provide your own cable.
- Be prepared for a 3-minute question and answer period moderated by the
head judge during which the judges will verify your understanding of the
topic.
Judging Criteria
- Safety, 10%
- Effectiveness of the demonstration in addressing the learning objective,
20%
- Knowledge of subject, 20%
- Video Production, Presentation, Creativity & Style, 30%
- Reponses to judge's questions, 20%
Team Identification
Each submission (research reports, web CDs, lab
reports, etc) must include the following 4 items:

team A or B, designation, if applicable

names of students (clearly printed legibly)

name of coach
