SURGE DEVICE
I fianlly got my surge device working with the help of Phill and Carlos.  Setup on May 11th 2002.  The surge comes from my refugium which is located just above my sump/frag tank.  The surge goes through one inch PVC.  It is your simple toilet style surge.  The total cycle for the surge is about four minutes.  In the pictures you can see how strong this surge is.  Within a few hours of starting the surge, the corals are looking better.  Their polyps are out fully and with the help of a LOA shield, you can watch the polyps get blown around by the surge.
This is what we are going for.  The hole sizes are dependent on water flow, PVC size, total drop off and anything else you can think of.
NOTE: I have added the two extra 90's in order to raise the volume/water level of the refugium.  The first 90 is all you really need, just turn it upside down.  Also, the "low water level" can be lowered by adding a piece of PVC and lowering the hole to approximately 1/2" above the end of the PVC.
Picture is NOT drawn to scale.  Holes drilled with reckless abandonment.
