Sung turns aside Pasadena in 16-7 win
Glendale High boys' water polo team gets 19 saves from
goalkeeper in Pacific League victory.

SOUTHEAST GLENDALE -- He didn't complain about the workload in the cage.
Glendale High boys' water polo goalkeeper Jerry Sung's caginess to get in good position and make twice as many saves as normal might put the Nitros in the driver's seat to win a Pacific League championship.
Sung made 19 saves to lead Glendale to a 16-7 league victory against visiting Pasadena on Wednesday.
The senior served as a lightning rod, finishing with 13 second-half saves while battling the sun
"It's a lot of saves to make in a match," said Sung, on of the three returning all-leaguers. "i'm normally making around eight saves a match, but sometimes I have to play with instinct. The sun was tough because I kept seeing shadows."
Sung didn't have the luxury of wearing sunglasses or a baseball cap to combat the sun.
Sung's agility allowed him to turn aside several point-blank shots by Pasadena (11-11, 1-3 in league) and give Glendale (6-6, 3-1 in league) an opportunity to mount an offensive attack.
"He's not a big goalkeeper, but he covers the cage with his quickness," Glendale Coach Pat Lancaster said. "That's because he's always in good position. He was blocking breakaway shots in the fourth quarter.
"He can make up for a lot of our defensive mistakes, and we are in the hunt for a league title."
Glendale, winners of four of its past five matches, likely will battle Arcadia and Crescenta Valley for the league championship, Sung will need to continue playing a major role for the Nitros to reach the top spot in the standings.
So must hole guard Matt Hahn, who scored five goals Wednesday. Hahn, another all-leaguer, scored four first-half goals to help the Nitros build a 9-4 lead.
"It seems like we always win the sprint because of Hahn," Lancaster said.
Pasadena found truth in Lancaster's logic after Hahn scored two goals while driving the length of the pool on Glendale counterattacks.
Glendale, which never trailed, also received five goals from Lars Speer.
The Nitros have scored 10-or-more goals seven times this season. Glendale has won six of those seven matches.
