Shahid Saber: Martyr Intellectual Picture of Shahid Saber

Born: Eidgaon village, Cox's Bazar, December 18, 1930.

Writer and Journalist.

He finished his Matriculation from Chittagong Collegeate School in 1949. He became active in leftist politics at that time, and became a member of the Chattra Federation. It was the time, the Muslim League government was ruling with an iron fist. They tried to put an end to the democratic movement by tortures and harassments. As an active member of the progressive political camp, Shahid Saber was arrested in February, 1950.

After spending several years in prison without a trial, he was released in 1954. He earned the B.A. degree from Jagannath College in 1955.

He sat for the Federal Information Service employment test and stood first, however, he was not hired because he was a political prisoner.

After having taught at the West End High School as an assistant teacher, he joined the Daily Songbad as an Assistant Editor.

His work years are only between 1955-1958. He became mentally unstable at the end of 1958. It continued between 1958 to 1971, however, he had never been extremely unstable. He wrote brilliant poems at this period of his life. His favorite spot was the Songbad office.

He wrote his famous article "Arek Dunya Theke" from the Chittagong jail. It was published in the literary magazine, Notun Shahittya, published from Calcutta. He wrote a long letter to the editor of the 'Notun Shahittay' magazine to congratulate a newcomer novelist, now well-known, Manik Banarjee. This is where Shahid Saber started his career as a poet and short-story writer.

He wrote scores of poems but none ever published in as a book. He also translated two books. He was honored with the Bangla Academy Award for short stories in 1972 (posthumously).

During Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971, while sleeping, he was burned alive when the Pakistani soldiers torched the Daily Songbad office on March 31st.
