Born: Khoyer pur village, Kishorgonj, 1928.
Eye Specialist. He passed Matriculation from Kishorgonj High School in 1945, I.Sc. from Calcutta Islamia College in 1948, M.B.B.S. from Dhaka Medical College in 1955, and D.O. from London in 1961. He was active in politics since his student life. He played a pivotal role in the success of the Dhaka University 4th class employee strike in 1948. He was also active in the Language Movement of 1952, and was imprisoned in 1953. He was the Vice-President of Dhaka Medical College Student Union from 1954-1955. He was the Registar of Saint James Hospital in England from 1961-1963, Chief Eye Specialist of Mirjapur Kumudini Hospital from November 1963 to October 1965, Associate Professor of the IPGMR(Institute of Post-Graduate Medicine and Research) at Dhaka from June to December 1967, Associate Professor of Dhaka Medical College from January 1968 to September 1970, Associate Professor of Rajshahi Medical College from June to October 1971, and the Associate Professor of Sir Solimullah Medical College at Dhaka from November to December 1971. He was the Joint Secretary of East Pakistan Medical Association from 1957-1958, and General Secretary from 1967-1968. He also was the General Secretary of East Paksitan Opthalmological society in 1969. He was the Editor of Khapchara (monthly) from 1941-1942, Jatrik(monthly) from 1952-1953, and East Pakistan Medical Journal from 1957-1958. Abdul Alim Chowdhury believed in a socialist political system. He was inspired by the Bangalee Nationalist Movements of the 60s. He was a strong supporter of the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan 1971. Many of his publications are scattered across many newspapers and magazines. Death: During the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971, like many other intellectuals, Abdul Alim Chowdhury was picked up by the Al-Badar Bahini (militia cadars of Islamic fundamentalist Jamat-e-Islami, and right hands of Pakistani military's genecide in Bangladesh) on December 14. He was brutally killed in the slaughtering ground of Mirpur. |
