Here's my trivia challenge: A few years back, I wrote a series of brief couplets for all seventy-eight original series episodes and six motion pictures featuring the original crew (for a total of 84). Each brief rhyme provides a clue to the particular episode or movie it is supposed to represent. I present here 12 of those couplets. See if you can guess which episode or movie of classic Trek each one is about. When all twelve have been correctly guessed, I'll post the next twelve. And I know that most of these rhymes aren't masterpieces of poetry, I did the best I could, okay?
Here are the first twelve:
1. Although the growths in this show heal all disease,
They can have even Vulcans climbing trees.
2. Kirk learns that letting sleeping giants wake
Can often prove a superhuman mistake.
3. It is hoped that a superb feat of replication
Will help to curb a planet's population.
4. This thing caused one of Starfleet's disasters,
Yet they named an institute after its master.
5. A well-known con man seeks to stir up trouble
On a planet where the pleasure's more than doubled.
6. Strained diplomatic and family relations
Just added to this mission's complications.
7. Even races far advanced and most discerning
The art of raising children are still learning.
8. When one's beaux gains new internal arrangements,
It might be time to break off the engagement.
9. A society can be governed so illogical
When the rulers live in reigons nephological.
10. These aliens have a great deal of conceit
To think Kirk will be scared by their Trick-or-Treat.
11. There aren't to many actions more oblique
Than to model a world after the Third Reich.
12. To kill with a historical illusion
Was this world's method of trespass prosecution.
There they are! Happy guessing!

Matthew got all of them right except for the three that D.K. later picked up on. Hmm . . . I guess if you think about it, #7 could apply to "Charlie X" although I intended it to be "The Squire of Gothos." Okay, let's see if this batch is any more challenging!

Wow, 12 for 12! And I've barely had time to catch my breath from typing them! Yes, these really aren't that hard for anyone who has an in-depth knowledge of Trek trivia. Anyway, here's the next dozen . . .

To Matthew Patterson: How about I do some TNG ones? Here are a few I come up with:
1. The first mission of the Enterprise crew
Involves an entity known as Q.
2. Pulaski faces her worst fears
When she faces "The Deadly Years"
3. It looks like it will be quite hard
To stop them believing in "The Picard"
4. An all-revealing virus! It will bore.
They go where Kirk`s crew have boldly gone
before.
5. The crew quickly had better check
if they`re still on the holodeck.
What do you think?

Which could become a Federation threat.

A fight with Nausiccans, and no wife.
8. He knew from the beginning she wasn`t Terrelian

9. Q is devoid of all his powers
It will keep the audience laughing for hours!

6. Q Who?
7. Tapestry
8. Liaisons
9. Deja Q

Q Who is correct. As are the others. I haven`t thought of any more yet, but I will soon.

Oh, sorry! I forgot that the question mark was part of the title, and I thought you were asking me if that were correct. Well, I`ve come up with some more...
10. Relations between two races are stressed
To make matters worse, the crew are possessed!
11. They revert to what they were like then
It must be something to do with RVN!
12. It`s Data`s negative emotions of recent
Which cause him to behave so indecent.
13. The Holodeck can be a distraction
But sometimes it can give you A Piece Of The Action!
14. It`s Tasha Yar for who the crew are rooting
In her fight against the wife of Lutan.

I`ve got some more:
15. After many attempts, the one Riker should try
Is not letting sleeping Borg drones lie.
16. Of a planet`s fate Picard wants no information
Because he doesn`t believe in predestination.
17. Even if the crew don`t believe in ghosts
They will after visiting this outpost.

Anyway, I don't know much about the "Maltese Falcon" but is 17. "Captain's Holiday"?
ScottN: Wasn't number 18 (not 17) "Suspicions"?
By Len on Thursday, July 01, 1999 - 09:45 am:
A precious object being hunted for years (the Falcon/technothingy) + A charming beautiful woman who can't be trusted (Mary Astor/Vash) + A powerful being(s) who wants the item (Sydney Greenstreet/those future aliens)+ A squirrely slimey guy who's playing them all (Peter Lorre/Ferengi)+ A stalwart hero who can't be corrupted despite his attraction to the woman (Humphrey Bogart/Picard) = Captain's Holiday (17) of course! Nice deduction Vince!
Which, alas, still leaves 13 (NOT Datalore or Descent), 16 (NOT Loud as a Whisper), and 18 (NOT Cause & Effect or Suspicions)! If they're unsolved by tomorrow, I'll add an additional couplet to each remaining Trekouplet.

Matthew? Vince?? Ready for another clue on 13 & 16?
By Vince on Thursday, July 01, 1999 - 07:00 pm:
HEY, HEY! I got 13!
"Legacy", Right?
Len, I, of course, had the exact same thoughts as you did about "Captain's Holiday"! ;)
As for 16, I have not a clue, or suspicion for that matter! :)

16: Allegiance
By Len on Friday, July 02, 1999 - 10:03 am:
Awrriight Vince!! Great going on Legacy! (and I had already drafted up a followup Trekouplet: "But they all wanted to call her 'sister,' in skin tight suit who could resister?" Hey: why waste it?? :^)
So here's the 16 with the added couplet:
"From outer space they won't ignore us,
now we're all singers in a chorus,
They sent their man to walk among us,
it caused a panic and quite a big fuss!"
I probably won't be able to get online over the long weekend (maybe) so I'll throw out a new 10 at the end of the day (or earlier if this one's solved!)

By Len on Friday, July 02, 1999 - 05:18 pm:
ok..I'm off for the weekend..so before I go, I'll leave you guys with my next batch of ST:NG Trekouplets (although I MUST say I always feel a bit guilty posting these in the Classic Trek folder- but hey! **I** didn't start this! :^)
So the tally after 20, with Scott closing the gap: Matthew(8), Vince(4), Scott(7), and Len(1) (the unsolved one!)
21. "Oops!," I say, I blew my top,
now there's no one minding shop
22. And now I say not we, but I,
for that you think my race might die?
23. Not Errol Flynn, Piccard's our man,
though Worf is not that kind of man
24. Where once it caused your heart to show,
now just seems to spur libido
25. Something is wrong! The war? The crew?, 'cause they don't see our hearts are true!
26. O Jean you've changed, you're not a bore,
but what can be behind that door?
27. Resistance is futile so explain those scoops, they're back I say, so call the troops!
28. With just a dose of telepathy,
we've missed our chance for love I see
29. Why he's not here I'm not understanding,
or why the universe is not expanding
30. We're just here to clean the ship,
but if you cut us well, you'll get a tip!
Happy 4th to all, Go out I say and have a ball!
(extra hint: I think that only 1 of the last 10 are being shown in NY's WPIX ST:NG marathon this weekend!)

Scott gets 4 (23, 24, 29, 30)
Vince gets 1 (22)

Still to solve: 16 and 21, 25, 26, 27, 28
I thought Naked Now (24) would go longer, BOBW was a reasonable guess for 27 but I think my solution fits the clue slightly better.
More tomorrow...

By Len on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 10:45 am:
Sorry Vince, but Scott is on a roll (although I wonder if we should subtract for wrong guesses? ;^)
Anyway, 27 IS Neutral Zone (a lot of Borg guesses, but this was the one where they struck, unnamed, and heralded the return of the Romulans ("We are back!") and 28 IS Attached, which leaves 21, 25, 26 (and STILL 16!! Another 2 lines to come tomorrow!)
I'm surprised that 25 is lasting!!
Here's a nit/question about The Neutral Zone: if the Borg weren't aware of us until Q Who, how is that consistent with the explanation that they attacked the Romulans in the Neutral Zone? Perhaps the Romulans have had other face-to-face meetings with the Borg that we don't know about? Is this too much TNG talk for this Classic Trek Board???

Ok, if 16 isn't Allegiance, perhaps 26 is Allegiance?
By Len on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 02:59 pm:
Scott: YESS!! 26 IS Allegiance!! Only 2 to go! 16 & 21. Let's wrap them up with the help of another 2 couplets and I'll try to come up with a new batch for tomorrow:
16. From outer space they won't ignore us,
now we're all singers in a chorus,
They sent their man to walk among us,
it caused a panic and quite a big fuss!
He was a man from planet Earth,
Who made it with Bebe Neuwirth!
21. "Oops!," I say, I blew my top,
now there's no one minding shop,
I feel so bad, they got my ire,
but why'd I killed the race entire?
By ScottN on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 03:55 pm:
16: Cause and Effect
21: The Survivors
By Meg on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 03:57 pm:
16 is First Contact
21 is The Survivors
By Meg on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 03:59 pm:
16 is First Contact
21 is The Survivors
By Len on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 04:43 pm:
Hey!! A close one: Scott noses out Meg by 2 minutes on 21- The Survivors, while Meg finally solves 16 - First Contact - Incidentally, the line about singers in the chorus was made by the president of the planet who beautifully (IMHO) tells Piccard something along the lines of "When I went to sleep last night, I was master of my universe, but this morning I find that I'm just a singer in a chorus." (Interesting wrong guess by Scott who tried "Cause & Effect" which happens to have Bebe Neuwrith's fellow Cheers actor Kelsey Grammer in it!)
So here's the tally after 30 with a new leader (and welcome aboard Meg!): Scott(14.5), Matthew(8), Vince(5), Meg (1.25) and Len(1.25)
(I figure each extra couplet for an episode reduces its value by 1/2 with the lost points going to ME :^), hence First Contact went from 1.0 to 0.5 to 0.25 and Survivors went from 1.0 to 0.5) (Incidentally, Scott also leads the league in MISSES with 12! - followed by Vince with 6, Matt with 4, and Meg with 1 ;^)
As interest still appears to be good, I'll try to post another 10 tomorrow morning around 10am.
By ScottN on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 04:51 pm:
Just as a note... The "singers in a chorus" could also have been the background noise that Crusher taped (that was my theory anyways...)
By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 04:56 pm:
I thought the "chorus" line was referring to Riva's chorus of interpreters.
By Vince on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 06:32 pm:
Well, I better be more conservative with my guesses from now on, and should also check this board much, much more often. :)
By ScottN on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 07:33 pm:
I lead the league in misses because I'm so prolific.... MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH [evil manaical laugh]

31-40 at last you'll see,
As we keep it in the family!
31. Brother should we fight?
Or choose a red or a white?
32. She's reminded of her father's recipe,
as Piccard wonders will or will not she?
33. A son, the fruit of our desire,
now let's decide who rules empire
34. And now I see I have a daughter,
While Troi commands? A scotch & water!
35. She's my daughter, I cannot fail her,
unless there's a big cascade failure!
36. A daughter of she, one who cannot be,
But now we see, our enemy
37. Call me "grandpa", that's what he said,
and now his words are in my head
38. You were my grandma's closest friend,
and in my family quite a trend
39. Are you my mother, can it be?
Or just a flaming fantasy?
40. Is she his mother? What a bother!
Or his sister? Go ask his father!

Scott(17.5), Matthew(11), Vince(6), Meg(3.25), Margie(1), and Len(1.25)
