EVALUATION OF STRESS FIELD AROUND RADIAL CRACKS
IN AN ANNULI SUBJECTED TO DIAMETRICAL TENSION USING FEM


INTRODUCTION

In 1989, a group of IISc, Bangalore students carried out an experimental analysis of radial cracks in an annuli subjected to diametrical tension on a photoelastic material. The experiment was carried out for various crack locations under varied load conditions.

However, we have deviated from the 1989 project by carrying out the analysis using FEM and on 25 models. The crack was an one sided crack at an angle of 90 degrees from the point of load. We have varied the RI/RO ratio and the A/W ratio to obtain 25 models.

Here RI = Internal radius of the annuli
RO= External radius of the annuli
A = crack length
w = width of the specimen = RO-RI

For each of the model, the stress variations around the crack tip, resultant displacement and the stress intensity factor was determined. Another model was created for the sole purpose of comparison with the experimental analysis. The stress intensity factor obtained was compared with the experimental value.
