Calla Lilly

Calla lily, the name itself means magnificent beauty. Its one of the easiest growing plants. It belongs to one of the bulb families. There are many different colors. White is common and it has frangrance. It is very easy to grow. it can be either planted in pot or in ground. In either way it grows well, esp. on ground.

I have a very good experience with white calla. Its botanical name is "zan-ted-DESH-ee-uh". When I brought this plant home, it had a very little part of the bulb under its stem. I was wondering if it would survive. I planted it in a pot. Now it always has atleast two or 3 blooms in a single plant. To my surprise, buds are coming out of the old flowers' stem, which I leave half cut, (I cut them when the flowers and the stems turn yellow and browny), just above the ground. I water the plant only once in two weeks.

Since, Calla lilly is a poisnous plant, its not good to eat . It prefers warm and sunny and even partial shade. Years ago these flowers were used for funerals but its elegance and beauty has lured brides to use them as bouquets on their weddings.

The rhizome or the bulb can be divided. The bulbs have to be placed in 2" deep soil. The color callas' come in varied colors which are wonderful and proud to own. These color hybrid plants grow well in pots than in ground.
