This is the largest region in all of Canada. The Canadian Shield Region covers over half of Canada, and touches all of the provinces and territories, except those in the Atlantic Region. This area has many deposits of minerals, such as gold, lead, copper, zinc, and uranium. Most of this area is made up of rock, but you can often find a thin layer of soil caused by glacial scraping, from the last Ice Age. This reigion is also home to thousands of lakes and lots of boreal forests. This reigion is generally colder and drier than The St. Lawrence Lowlands-Great lakes and the Atlantic regions. In fact, this area typically only gets abouts 80 frost free days. The average annual rainfall around here ranges from about 380mm to 1000mm. This region was originally inhabited by Inuit and the Algonkins. Nowadays, the Cree, Ojibway, and the Naskapi live here. Most people in this area live in resource based cities like Thompson, Yellowknife, and Thunder Bay. The main sources of income of this reigion are: forestry, logging, hydro electricity, and mining.
