Tobias sat back from
the heavy chesnut banquet table. They had feasted; willing victims lay on the
table, moaning. They weren't completely drained, so they'd survive, but Tobias
felt a little pang at their folly -- they'd never leave the catacombs or the
club above. They'd be fed on repeatedly as willing donors.
"Like
livestock," he murmured.
"But they like
it." Gretchen nuzzled his shoulder. "I want you to meet my best
friend. Her name is Magrat." She led him to a dark girl, all burning
bedroom brown eyes and black-painted pout. Her dark hair and skin glowed as she
smirked at him.
"Greetings,
Tobias." She leaned forward and ran a finger down his arm. He shivered.
"Magrat,"
he said respectfully with a twist to his lips. He did not like this one. She was
wily and exuded animal lust like Gretchen exuded passionate love. He turned to
Gretchen. "May we go, love?" He shuddered at the look on Magrat's
face, clinging to Gretchen's arm.
"Of course; you
have much to learn." She kissed Magrat's cheek and received her kiss in
return. Turning, she led him away. Tobias sighed in relief as they strode away,
but stiffened again when he heard Magrat's calling voice:
"If you ever
need a private tutor..."
***
Magrat sipped her
wine thoughtfully. The rubies in her goblet twinkled darkly. The boy was
enamored of Gretchen, but Gretchen seemed not to be in so deep -- yet. She must
act quickly; she didn't want to break up a happy family arrangment, just have a
challenge. Gretchen could have him back when she was finished. Since she could
only have a sip of wine at a time or get sick, she left hers unfinished as she
stood up.
Getting to her feet,
she swayed down to her room and sat at her writing desk. As she thought, she
stroked the wood, caressing the blood-stained mahongany. She penned a note and
sent it off to Tobias, with strict orders that Gretchen was not to see it. She
then went back up the club, to look for Venne.
***
"So I am
dominant only to people made after me." Tobias cocked his head and raised
an eyebrow. "What's that mean, exactly?"
"That you have
to be protected by someone. But this is only for the first five hundred
years." Gretchen touched his auburn hair thoughtfully. It was soft, so very
soft.
"I don't really
mind, I mean, I have you, what else could I want?" He blinked pale gray
eyes at her and smiled. "Love you," he said kissing her. He pushed
against her gently.
"You too,"
she replied, laying back on the couch.
***
Magrat paced. She did
that alot. The human on the bed watched her, half-fearfully, half with that look
that human males got when in a lady's bedroom. She turned to him. Stalking to
him, she shed her nightgown. He smiled.
"What's your
name?" She asked this in a childlike and helpless voice as she held him
down and unbuttoned his shirt.
"Jack." He
was breathing heavily. He made scared noises when he saw her flash fangs.
"Well, Jack. You
will be remebered." She reared back to strike.
"What?" And
he screamed. He screamed for a while, but gradually quieted and stopped kicking.
Then he was cold.
Magrat kicked the
body off of her bed and laughed, blood streaming down her face. She felt Venne
calling her, and pulled on a red leather corset and skirt before running to her
maker.
When Venne opened her
eyes, Magrat was there. They walked out into the club's main room. Standing back
to back, entwined, eyes closed, they lovingly enslaved those around them. Their
unholy power flowed out into the humans around them.
Opening their eyes,
they saw that everyone had stopped moving and was looking at them. Smiling and
moving in haunting unison, they sauntered into a more private room. Almost all
the humans followed. The door closed behind them, as they went to a room with
nothing but a huge mattress on the floor.
Magrat felt Gretchen
and Tobias, miles below her in the catacombs. She gently put Gretchen to sleep
and called Tobias to her.
***
Tobias awoke with a start. Gretchen was
asleep next to him, her creamy skin aglow in the candlelight. He kissed her
cheek and got dressed. He felt a wanderlust, a need to roam. He chalked it up to
curiosity and walked out of the room. As Tobias wandered down the halls, the
feeling became stronger, a compulsion.
There was
something he needed to see. Somewhere he needed to go. A place. A room.
Upstairs. He could picture it in his mind, although he knew he'd never been
there. There were people there. A specific person...he needed to see her. He
stumbled up the stairs and through a door. People, people everywhere, crawling
on each other. Biting, moaning, fucking...where was the person he needed to see?
...Magrat smiled and nearly wrenched Tobias' soul from his body.
{Come to me.}...
...Gretchen rolled over and cried out in her sleep...
Tobias was digging, shoving, clawing. He
had to see her. Who was she? He dug harder and harder, hurting all who were in
the way. Their cries egged him on.
...Magrat could almost feel her own hands tearing flesh as
Tobias ripped his way to her through the humans...
...Gretchen arched her back in pain. She was dying...dying...her
heart was burning...burning with a fire so hot...she was dying...
Tobias could feel her. She was within his
reach. He grabbed a dark arm and pulled Magrat to him. He suddenly felt
confused. Why was he so desperate to see Magrat? All thoughts left his mind as
she grabbed his hair and pulled him to her, kissing him. He was
sinking...drowning...he passed out.
...Magrat dropped Tobias to the floor and laid with him, looking
for all the world a satified woman.
...And Gretchen sat up, alone in a dark room, screaming his
name: "Tobias!"
***
Rushing, stumbling,
bleeding, she had to find Tobias. Gretchen was worried that he might have been
taken while she was asleep. What if something had happened to him? And hadn't
she locked the door..? Searching with her mind, she located him in a place she'd
been to before...but that she'd hoped Tobias would never go. Pausing outside the
door, she heard the throaty chuckle Magrat reserved for her sleeping conquests.
Holding back red-tinged tears, she kicked the door open.
***
Magrat could feel
Gretchen looking for Tobias. She chuckled and heard her kick the door in.
Without looking up, she said, "He's a fine specimen, I applaud your
tastes." She was still laughing when Gretchen ran sobbing from the room.
Leaning down, she licked Tobias' cheek. His eyes opened and he scrambled away
from her in fear. Back to the wall, he had nowhere to go when Magrat grabbed him
and rode him to the floor. Pinning his arms and legs, she breathed the scent of
old blood into his face and murmured in his ear, "Mine."
He screamed for
Gretchen over and over, but she never came. He wondered how he'd lost her and
his freedom all at once without even remembering it. Crying, he lay there and
called for the one he loved so much over and over.
Only a frenzied
vampire and cold stone walls heard him.
