Entanglement, Chapter 1: Gretchen

A/N:  Greetings all. This is a test run. I've been meaning to run this story for a long time, but with work and my OWN personal drama, it just was OUT OF REACH.

Sorry!

I love friends...email me or IM, I don't mind any of it.

I usually use Japanese names, but got tired of it. (Naze? Shirimasen!!!) So I'm using German names. (Warum? Ich weiss nicht!!!)

ANTI-DISCLAIMER: I own it allllllllllllllllll!!

~Prologue~

Gretchen never wanted to hurt anyone. It was all Magrat's fault. If she had just stayed away from Tobias, everything would have been okay. But she had flirted and teased and stuck her nose in Gretchen's business.

So now Gretchen was standing in a puddle of rain-washed blood, fangs dripping with her best friend's blood, screaming in agony at the loss of Tobias. Magrat had killed him so Gretchen had killed her.

And she wasn't sorry at all...

~Chapter 1~

Gretchen stretched languorously in her coffin, not fully ready to awaken, though the sun had risen long ago. She felt a twinge within her and suddenly went rigid. Pushing the lid off the coffin, Gretchen climbed out and went in search of food, the echoes of her footfalls chasing madly down the stone hallway. ~Hungry...hungry...HUNGRY!!!~ Her urges were almost overpwering...how long had she been asleep? Perhaps she'd missed a day? Gretchen shivered, pushing her instincts down. Sounds of pulsing music and moaning humans were wafting down the hallway towards her and she couldn't afford to lose control until she found a willing victim.

Walking through the dark room, various colored blinky-lights flashing, Gretchen glimpsed a beautiful and pale face in the crowd. Walking gracefully to the angel she saw floating in this mob, she embraced and kissed the boy. He closed his eyes and caressed her fangs with his tongue. As they both opened their eyes, they were held enraptured in eah other's gazes, completely oblivious. Gretchen turned and glided out, her usually sway just as enticing as ever, having tempted many to their pleasure or to their doom, but the boy was the only one who followed.

And he was the one she wanted. The only one she wanted. Laid out on her coffin, the boy looked not in the least scared, merely content, and a little anxious.

"Who are you, mortal boy, who is so young but seeks vampires and lays on a coffin lid as if you owned the world?" Gretchen was direct, and yet still poetic. She seemed to possess an unearthly air, almost a perfume that followed her, entrancing those around her. And yet... This boy, this human boy, was calm and seemingly unaffected.

"Tobias. I am Tobias." He paused. "And you are beautiful." Sitting up, he stripped off his vest and shirt. As he kneeled in front of her, he said, "I have been nocturnal since the day I was born. I have always known that my dreams of night and sharp, biting kisses were portents." He offered her his neck. "Let me join you. I am yours. Kill me or change me, I no longer care which. But do not leave me human to face the morning sun." The kid could play the poet, too, it appeared. Gretchen was impressed. ~Ah well, if he can't handle it, he'll stake himself.~

Gretchen leaned down and pushed against his neck, flicking her small pink tongue along his skin, tasting him. She pushed her fangs in, lapping and sucking at the blood pulsing from the wound. And when he was nearly dry and gasping for breath, she pulled away. "Well?"

"It's like sex, isn't it?" His eyes rolled and he was heaving in pleasure.

"Choose," she said. And an eternity was conveyed in those words.

"Change me." Gretchen pierced her wrist with her fangs and pressed it to Tobias' lips.

        "Drink."

        "Thank you."

***

Tobias opened his eyes and it was still dark. Memory flooded him and he sighed, almost laughing in triumph. He was whole. The fate that had haunted him had been achieved, and it felt great. And not a more beautiful woman could have been his benefactor. ~Gretchen...My mistress...~ He felt her next to him, warm; she was awake.

        "Tobias."

        "Yes?"

"How do you feel?" Genuine concern was in her voice.

"Unbelievable. I thought it would hurt." He did laugh then, a boyish, open, and completely carefree laugh. Gretchen chuckled along with him, a throaty, sexy chuckle.

"Do you want to meet your family, Tobias?" And she led him from her coffin.

***

Magrat danced to the music she had requested from the band. Entertaining and breaking the hearts of those she had invited. And she hated them. All of them. ~So boring...I could have any and all of them...Where's the challenge in this?~ A bell tolled somewhere below her, in the catacombs. ~Oooo...a new one...~ She turned and left the dazed human boys to seek a challenge.

***

Gretchen lead Tobias by the hand to the Main Hall in solemn silence. ~This boy...I like him.~ "Tobias," she said aloud.

"Hmm?" He was still dazed. "Yes?"

"Why me?" She paused and turned to look at him. "There are other clubs, other vampires. Why me?"

He walked past her, following the sound of the deeply tolling bell. "Didn't you feel it?"

"Feel what?" Gretchen trailed behind him in confusion.

        "Don't you believe in fate?"

Gretchen did believe. And she felt a wash of pleasure. He was hers. This angelic demon was hers to have. She could keep him. She had been searching for such a one to join her. Having had her share of being impetuous, she wished to settle with one person and see the world. "Tobias..." She was suddenly in his arms. She hadn't seen him move.

"Hush now. I sought out the right one, and I've found you. You are the face I saw in my dreams, Gretchen." He took a deep, shuddering breath, and Gretchen was moved to hold him tighter. She had a suddenly deperate desired for him not to cry. "I am a psi, Gretchen, I knew it would come to this. My grandmother cursed me, my parents shunned me, and now you have accepted me. Let's leave it at that for now."

They walked on in silence, side by side, very close together. Upon entering the Main Hall, Gretchen walked right to the center of the floor and Tobias followed. The others took their seats.

"Brothers! Sisters! A new soul walks among us. He joined our ranks last night." She smiled at him, he grinned back. "He is dear to me." Looking back to the assembled vampires, she said in a great voice, "Welcome him! Welcome Tobias!" And they all came forward, pressing them together, pressing into them, smelling, feeling, and all the time, chanting, chanting the name "Tobias."

***

Magrat nipped the boy's alabaster shoulder. "Tobias," she murmured. "Tobias."

A/N: So..? It sucks, huh? Suggestions welcome, but I don't know what I plan to do with this.
