On the day this information was released to the public, there was a slight conflict on what the  turtle's name was. In numerous newspaper articles, the Alligator snapping turtle was called Cowabunga, yet on the nightly news it said the turtle was called Tony.

I visited the Australian Reptile Park in July, 2001. While I was there, I saw the infamous Sydney sewer-dwelling turtle and was delighted to see that he was renamed as my favourite TMNT, Leonardo!

Leonardo's female companion is called Terminator. Unfortunately, the Australian Reptile Park experienced a horrific fire which destroyed and killed many of the park's inhabitants (this was before Leonardo was discovered). The female turtle was called Terminator because she reminded the zookeepers of a scene from the movie, Terminator, as she slowly walked through the burning embers.

Leonardo and Terminator are curently in the same enclosure (well, since the last time I checked in 2001). I haven't heard any news about Leonardo and Terminator's offspring, so I presume that they haven't had little baby turtles as of yet.

Here is a link to the Australian Reptile Park's website. It is located in Gosford, NSW, Australia.

On the website, there is a page dedicated to Leonardo, one of the biggest reptilian celebrities of all time. Below is the direct link to the page.

If you are an Australian and are interested in keeping your own reptile, then here is a link on how to receive a reptile licence.
