Colonial Williamsburg
Imagine if you will a colony preserved in time, with people still living in their old ways, in our present time. Some people might say that no such place exists, that it's fiction at its greatest. I have been to a place like this: Colonial Williamsburg. "Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area portrays 18th-century Williamsburg as it appeared on the eve of the American Revolution. Throughout the city, an engaging mix of sights, sounds and activities helps visitors reconnect with America's past and become active participants in 18th-century life." (ColonialWilliamsburg.com) This place has many spectacular and wonderful things for all ages. I will try to recount my time in this old city as best as I can.
I heard the sound of horse hooves on the street, made by horse drawn carriages. We saw the sight of the first settlers, who talked about their history, yet is also our history, and reenacting the events of the past that made America into this great county. I was with a few of my friends from, out of town who had never been there before; thus, my friend John and I were determined to show them a good time. We walked down the brick sidewalk and my friend started to tell our visitors about the history of all the places there; however, none of which were true, but were great fabricated stories. "My parents got married there," John stated as he pointed at the old church, then moving his hand pointing at a little house, "And that's where a famous bank robber lived for many years." Each story got more outrageous then the last. Like all first timers they wanted to stop for a photo shoot in the shackles in front of the court house. We walked around there for a bit after that, then walked over near William and Mary campus.
Colonial Williamsburg is also right next to William and Mary. I enjoy the atmosphere of their open grounds. We took our guest to the sunken garden, which is just
a field, played some soccer, and took more pictures. There were a lot of other people there playing things like football, frisbee, hacky sack, and few other different things out in the sun. Eventually we got tired of soccer and we went for a drive along the parkway.
We found ourselves at College Creek off the Colonial Parkway. There I felt the breeze in my hair and the sand in between my toes. Here we saw most people lying on the beach tanning, flying kites, or just playing in the water. We just swam for a little bit, it was getting late and it was time to start heading home. All in all, this was a fun place to hang out with friends and we completely enjoyed our day.
From ye old days, to new ones, Colonial Williamsburg is a great place to go with your family, friends, or anyone. No matter what you like to do, I'm sure you will find something fun to enjoy at Colonial Williamsburg.
