Traditionally,
India Pale Ales, the hoppiest of all pales, were brewed with more alcohol
and large quantities of hops in order to survive the lengthy ocean journey
from the U.K. to India. Unlike our brewing forefathers, Great Divide
enjoys the modern benefits of refrigeration and they don’t have any plans
to ship Titan IPA to India. Instead, they brew Titan IPA for hop disciples
– independent beer drinkers seeking out robust, flavorful beers
characterized by their abundance of hops flavor, aroma and bitterness
(yup... that's me). As
a big, aggressively hopped India Pale Ale, Titan IPA fills this bill –
beginning with piney hop aromas and citrus hop flavors, and finishing with
a rich, malty sweetness that is carefully balanced with crisp hop
bitterness.
Titan IPA weighs in at a considerable 65
International Bittering Units (IBUs) and sports a numbing 6.8% Alcohol By
Volume (ABV).
To find the letterbox that pays homage to this
robust ale, you've got to (as this beer's label suggests) climb a big,
aggressively sloped mountain. To begin...
Once you’ve safely returned Pete’s Wicked Ale to its hiding
spot, make your way through the woods and find the solid white stripe.
Follow it up (if a truck can do it, so can you). Follow this white stripe
until it ends, and continue walking straight ahead, as if the white stripe
kept going, until you reach a gate made for people. Turn to the left and
walk alongside the barrier, following it around the corner. At the next
corner, walk away from the corner at a 45 degree angle (at about that same
heading) until you reach a twisted steel cable lying on the granite. Turn
right and follow it until it connects to a larger cable. Turn right and
follow that to another barrier. Turn left and walk alongside the barrier,
then along the edge of the exposed granite until you reach another cable
lying on the granite. Take 10-11 steps (along the edge of the granite)
from where the cable surfaces out of the organic debris. You should be
just past a good-size cedar (I think). If you look to the right and see a
man-made structure, you went too far. Turn 90 degrees to your right, and
spot that cedar about 6-8 steps straight ahead. You’ll have to literally
get inside the branches of the tree to find, at its base, an arrangement
of rocks covered by debris. You need to remove ONLY the top rock to
retrieve Titan IPA from its hiding spot.
This is a one-color stamp: black, dark grey or dark
green will do.
This is a HIGH traffic area, and I recommend
staying put while you stamp in. Of course, you don’t need to stay IN the
tree, but parking your butt right there would eliminate coming and going
and coming and going.
