Many antique quilt patterns are known by different
names, depending on regional customs and designers. The "Contrary
Wife" pattern was published in August, 1941 in The Kansas
City Star. Variations of this pattern are known as "Road to
California", and "Jacks on Six" which was published in the
periodical Ohio Farmer in 1894. Regardless of its name, this
simple pattern conveys the Midwestern charm of prairie quilts.
Pioneer women hand-pieced this quilt pattern to make warm
quilts for the cold winter nights on the prairie.
