Tour de Europe 2000
by Javad, Jaikanth, and Matthew

Matt, Jaik, and I decided to attempt to backpack across a coupla of countries in Europe over a span of 2 weeks in the summer of 2000. Jaik and I were both on leave from the army, so we couldn't take more than that. Well, like I said... we tried. We started in London, where we were to spend 4 days, proceeded from there to Amsterdam by Eurorail via Brussels, planning to stay 3 days, and from there the plan was to proceed to Frankfurt for 2 days, Berlin in time to catch the Love Parade and leave the next day, Paris for a weekend, and back to London to catch a plane back home. The reality turned out to be rather different than what we had expected...

1st Stop: London, England

London was fairly problem-free, we stayed at a budget hotel in a triple room which was a little more expensive than we had ben hoping for, but we had failed to make reservations at a hostel, and this was peak season. So we took whatever we could find, which turned out to be the York House Hotel, near Earl's Court (above right).

We saw the sights (clockwise, from top left): Big Ben, the big-ass clock; London Bridge, which (thank God) didn't fall down, and the Tower bridge in the background; the Monument to the Great Fire of London, which we climbed, all 300+ steps of it, despite Matthew's complaints; the London Eye, the big-ass ferris wheel that was put there for the '99 to 2000 party; and Westminster Abbey, the big-ass abbey.

We chilled in Camden Town, which I loved to death; we went to Home, the big-ass club with 7 stories; we hung out at Piccadilly Circus.

We met up with Matt's relatives, with my relatives, and had to negotiate with 2 policemen for Jaik's release after he was caught taking a piss through the wall into the Houses of Parliament.

All in all, London was pretty relaxing
,
but soon we found ourselves at the train station,
and it was time to head for Brussels and AMSTERDAM.
