Snake River Conspiracy was formed as a duo in the San Francisco Bay area by ex-Third Eye Blind member Jason Slater who felt his former band fell too far into the pop mainstream. He brought in singer Tobey Torres from Mammoth, CA. He specifically wanted a woman to front Snake River Conspiracy to give it the feel he was looking for: "The girl is the whole band. That was the idea from the beginning. If it was some guy, we'd be just like any other Nine Inch Nails clone on the block." The band hit the studio and the result of their efforts was "Sonic Jihad".

The album is a mix of anger and irony, highlighted in songs like "You and Your Friend" and "Somebody Hates You". The album features two covers, "Love Song" by The Cure and our old favourite, "How Soon Is Now?" by the Smiths.
