The group formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1991, and spent three years locked together in a tiny rehearsal space before hitting the Los Angeles club scene. Originally titled simply Dish, they were forced to extend that name when they discovered the rights to it were already held by a group from the east coast of America. They switched instead to Dishwalla, a name taken from a magazine article about satellite-dish pirates in rural India.
After a tour with Better Than Ezra, A&M released the group's debut album in 1995, consisting of 11 selections produced by the Butcher Brothers. While songs such as Explode revealed the influence of the Cure, others owed more to the sustained riffing of heavy metal and hard rock bands. Another unusual feature was the predominance of sampling within the basic rock framework; while this was not a wholly original idea it had rarely been practised so extensively.
The release of their third album Opaline was also an important milestone for the industry as a whole. It was the first time a new music release hit stores in both CD and DVD Audio formats.
