Biography
Although it's now hard to imagine The Cranberries without Dolores O'Riordan's voice, she is not an original member. The band, at the time called "The Cranberry Saw Us", was formed in Limerick in 1990 by brothers Noel and Mike Hogan and Fergal Lawler. Their first singer, a male , left the band and they placed an advertisement for a female singer in the music press. Their first studio album was 1993's "Everybody Else is Doing It, so Why Can't We?", produced by Stephen Street who had earlier worked with The Smiths. The album was not an immediate success, but after the band built up a live reputation in the States, touring with The The and Suede, airplay and consequently sales took off.
"No Need to Argue" followed in 1994, outselling their debut, aided by the strong singles "Zombie" and "Ode to My Family". They changed producers for "To The Faithful Departed" bringing in Bruce Fairburn, whose previous credits included Aerosmith. The result was a rockier sound, perhaps thought better suited to the American market, although it did not sell as well there as its predecessor. Despite persistent rumours that the band was breaking up, they released "Bury the Hatchet" in 1999.
