Baynard, Lord of Dunmow, dying in the reign of William Rufus, left to his son Geoffry, from whom it came to Will Baynard, who, having forfieted his barony of Little Dunmow, and "honor of Baynard�s Castle", both were conferred by Henry 1st on Robert Fitzwalter, the son of Gilbert, Earl of Clare, in whose family it remained for 3 Centuries.
