Down beside the river
And in among the trees,
A wildcat sits and ponders,
Scratching at his fleas.

*
Hes waiting for a tasty snack
And listening for a twig to snap.
His eyes agleam, like coals of fire,
Dreaming of his hearts desire.

*
Dinner time is past and gone
And still the wildcat lingers on.
Hope in his heart that springs anew
With every breeze the west wind blew.

*
Restless now and muscles twitching,
Claws outstretched and tail aflicking,
Peering from his leafy bower,
Patiently, hell pass the hour.

*
Waiting till the time is ripe
For claws of steel to give a swipe
At passing buck or trembling fawn
That he may still his hunger on.

*
A shot rings out and passes near.
triggering the wildcats fear.
The slitted eyes look quickly round
While ears are angled for a sound,

*
Sending a signal to his feet,
And in that instant he will leap.
The wildcats instincts giving way;
He was the preditor here today.

*
But survival teaches what it can.
Hed learned this from the son of man.
Marking well where the shot rang out,
In that split second he turned about.

*
Launching himself with feline grace,
The wildcat swiftly left the place.
Fear gave him speed to get him far,
For on his thigh he bore a scar.
One foot long and bought with pain.
A souvineer from the son of Cain.
