1189AD TO 1199AD
fourth child of King Henry II
WIFE; BERENGARIA -
(DAUGHTER OF SANCHO VII The wise,King of Navarre.)


1189AD =King Richard granted to Sir Robert Percy the custody of
the Manor of Kennington Palace; and appointed him steward, with
wages of four pence a day.

1189AD =Sister Joan served as chaperone to his Berengaria on
3rd crusade.

1189AD =Eleanor upon her release from confinement made a royal
progress on behalf of her son King Richard.

1189AD =Eleanor was granted by Richard the lands of the two Queens
of England who preceeded her as well as those Henry II had given
to his Mother Matilda.

1189AD =Aug.13th, Richard reached Portsmouth.

1189AD =Aug.15th, Arrives in Winchester where he met his mother
Eleanor.

1189AD =Sept.3rd: Richard Crowned at Westminster. An Embassy of
Jews arrived at the Palace to present Richard with gifts and
present their respects, but the crowd outside the Palace fell
upon them and killed many and burned their houses. Richard was
furious over the financial loss and property damage. Several
of the mob were hanged.

1190AD =Regent Bishop Longchamp surrounded the Tower of London
with an embattled stone wall, "and a broade and deepe ditch;"
for breaking down part of the city wall he was deposed and
besieged in the Tower, but surrendered after one night.

1190AD =Richard I is represented on the wall of the round Temple
of the Knights Templers with the sword which he wielded as Crusader.

1190AD =Richard announced that in default of children of his own
the succession was to go to Arthur, Son of his deceased brother
Geoffrey, who was four at the time.

1191AD =Dec. Richard met his brother John and a bastard half
brother Geoffrey in Normandy and forced both to swear holy oaths
not to return to England for three years.

1191AD =Eleanor crossed over to Normandy to meet Beringaria,
then escorted her to Brendisi where Richard had sent a ship to
bring them to Messina. Eleanor had Richard release John from
his Holy oaths.

1191AD =March 30th Richard met Eleanor and Berengaria at Messina.

1191AD =April 3rd.Eleanor left Messina for England.

1191AD =Summer; Longchamps dismissal from office for his
mistreatment of Archbishop Geoffrey. Longchamps powers as Papal
legate had lapsed with the death of Pope Clement the III.

1192AD =Sept 2nd; Formal end to 3rd Crusade by treaty with Richard
and Saladin.

1192AD =Dec/Jan; Richard imprisoned by Leopold, Duke of Austria.

1193AD =Fall; When 100,000 marks had been sent to Germany to
Leopold along with hostages pledged for the Ballance, Richard
wrote to Eleanor and the Archbishop of Rouen to come to Speyer
and celebrate xmas with him and the Emperor.

1194AD =FEB. 2nd; Richard was released, but not until Feb. 4th,
when Richard swore homage to Henry at Eleanors bidding was he
finally freed.

1194AD =MARCH13th; By way of Cologne and Antwerp, Richard and
Eleanor finally landed at Sandwich. John was already in flight
to France. The Council had deprived John of his lands and castles.

1194AD =APRIL 17TH; Richards 2nd Coronation took place. This was
done to make it clear that the homage he swore to John had not
affected his position as King.

1194AD =MAY 12TH; Richard and Eleanor crossed to Barfleur.
Niether saw England again!

1199AD =March 26th; As he was laying siege to the Castle of
Viscount Adhemar, a bolt from a crossbow struck him on the left
shoulder, and penetrated deeply into his neck. He summoned his
mother.

1199AD =April 6th; Shortly before Eleanor arrived, he died. He
left his kingdom to John. At his request his body was burried
at the feet of his father Henry II in the crypt of the Nunnery
at Fontevrault.

1199AD =Richard I confirmed former grants to Waltham Abbey and
bestowed on the canon his whole manor of Waltham, with the great
wood and park, (Harold�s Park), 300 acres of assorted land; the
market of Waltham; and 160 acres of assorted land there- the
canons paying yearly to his exchequer 60(?) in lieu of all
services. Further additions by charter and grants were also made
in his reign.
