INTO SPACE

BY

NINA C. FULFORD

This poem was written to commemorate the first space flight
by the American team. I was very impressed by the courage of
these two men going off into the unknown like that.

Blast off the timer crys,
As into space the rocket flies.
Orbit the Earth to the count of ten.
A capsule containing two fine men.
Signals flow from Earth to Space.
Fast they go from place to place.
Van Allen belts of radiation
Pose a problem for their nation.
But braves the word for these two men,
Who oft have dared and dare again.
When soon their craft decends the blue,
Laurel leaves await these two.
