Sailing their boats and watching them float
In the ditch by the side of the road
Are five little lads no bigger than tads
In the ditch by the side of the road.

Small childs sailboat

Ones sailing a snail in a little red pail
In the ditch by the side of the road.
Toms dribbling jam on a ketch from Siam
In the ditch by the side of the road.

Snail riding in a pail

A third one is losing a ship that was cruising
In the ditch by the side of the road.
Another sits dreaming and silently scheming
In the ditch by the side of the road.

Small black boy Small black haired boy
But the last one of all, and hes having a ball
In the ditch by the side of the road,
Is my son and heir with the blonde curly hair,
In the ditch by the side of the road.

Small blonde boy
