The Songs
1. DISCLAIMER
I love this opening. It completely shows the stupidity of some of the ways we are "protected" from harm. Great fast guitar work too. Not to mention the characteristic Offspring humour.
2. THE MEANING OF LIFE
This is the perfect choice for an opening song. Fast, furious, very punk, this is Offspring at it's best. And certainly, I for one can relate to the message here- "I gotta go find my own way, i gotta go make my own mistakes". Love it.
3. MOTA
This one's about how fucked up a junkie's life can get. It's tragic but funny in a way only Dexter could make it. Luv the lyrics, just luv the song really.
4. ME AND MY OLD LADY
Now we're talking. This one's gotta be my favourite on the whole album. It's got an Indian sytle rhythm and melody- almost like a raga in places. That gives it a very characteristic sound. It's about Dexter and his wife and how being punks has made them different from other people. I love the tune, the lyrics and great percussion here. In fact, I love this one so much I've downloaded it from Napster just so I can hear it when I'm on my PC. I can't lay my finger on what it is I love so much, but there's definately a certain something about this track.
5. COOL TO HATE
Now this is one track my parents
might not approve of. It's just sooo punky with a delicious edge of gothic attitude.  I love it! True Offsring.
6. LEAVE IT BEHIND
I have to admit I'm not so keen on this one. Not that it matters because my opinion is not really that valuable.
7. GONE AWAY
Gorgeous! I could cry to this song. It's about losing someone close to you and how it makes you feel. Beautifully performed, written and put together. This one's a masterpiece. I reckon it'll become a classic anthem in the future, I mean it is already really. Well, I think so. Course, the preps wouldn't agree, but when did we ever listen to them?
8. I CHOOSE
This song must have been written by a genius because it manages to make reasons for suicide humourous. The lyrics, tune and bass line are perfect- this is an all round masterpiece.
9. INTERMISSION
All I can say is this is such a good example of Dexter's great humour.
10. ALL I WANT
I love this track. It's about how rules stop you living the way you want to. I have personal experience of the message here I'm sorry to say.
11. WAY DOWN THE LINE
The message here is that no matter how hard you try, you'll end up like your parents in the end. Aaaaaaaaah please don't let this one be true!
12. DON'T PICK IT UP
I love this track (mind you there isn't really one I don't love). It's fast, funny and very Offspring. I can't understand how anyone could not like this one. I especially like the percussion here.
13. AMAZED
This is another sad one. The message is that the world is false and nobody really cares about you. It's beautifully tragic. If I'm low I listen to this one and it feeds my depression.
14. CHANGE THE WORLD
This is a brilliant end to an album which is, in my opinion, the best album ever made. Apparently this track was originally written for Smash, the album released before Ixnay. If you listen to the very last riff on Smash, after the title track, you'll notice that is has the some tune
as this one.
