ALIVE

Like emerging from the womb,
I am introduced to a new world
where nothing is frightening,
only fascinating and awaiting my first step.
My hands pass before my eyes
and I am amazed at these protrusions
and that they respond to my every whim!
Somwehere in the middle of my body
I feel there to be some kind of rhythm,
a kind of regular rush that makes me breathe
faster and faster making my eyes grow
wider and wider until
I am forced to blink in the blinding light.
I feel lightheaded and dizzy
and I want to run in every direction,
stubbing my toes, feeling no pain.
Ankles stuck together as if bound.
Bounding from spot to spot
like a rabid pogo stick,
I giggle like a man confined by padded walls.
People walk around all day
taking the pavement that they walk on for granted.
I wish to crawl on hands and knees
inspecting the very pebbles imbedded in the floor.
I want to see the veins in a single leaf.
I want to know how it feels
to have a drop of sweat blaze a path down my chest
that started its journey on someone else's body.
I want to feel everyone and everything.
I want to live
