ITINERARY :

                         THE           INCA   TRAIL

DAY 1.- CUSCO - HUAYLLABAMBAOur adventure begins with an hour private bus ride from Cusco to Urubamba or Ollantaytambo village. Here, we stop for 30-50 minutes to organize porters and have an optional breakfast before continuing to the 82 Km marker where we begin our trek. We stop for lunch and to view Llactapata during the day.  After 5-6 hours, we arrive at our first destination, the village of Huayllabamba.  Dinner is served before our first night of camping. (3,000 meters above the sea level = 9,000 feet above sea level)

DAY 2.- HUALLABAMBA - PACAYMAYU.   Our second day is the most challenging with a steep climb up Warmiwańusca pass at 4,200 meters (13,700 feet). Over the course of this 5 hour hike, we take in spectacular views of the Peruvian Andes and River Valleys below.  Day two ends with a descent through a subtropical rainforest to the Valley of Pacaymayu, where we have dinner and settle in for the night.

DAY 3.- PACAYMAYU -WIŃAYWAYNA.  After a 7:00a.m. breakfast, we begin Day 3 with a climb over our second pass where we glimpse Cordillera Vilcabamba behind us and the Runcuracay pass ahead.  We then cross the Continental Divide at 3,800 meters (12,900ft.) and enter the Amazon Basin. Our trail becomes defined by large flat boulders descending into the ruins of Sayacmarca. This distinctly different environment is evident by the rainforest trees decorated with wild orchids, paradise plants, and flocks of parrots. After passing through an Inca tunnel, we emerge at the ruins of Phuyupatamarca, which marks our 3rd Pass at 3,600 meters (11,600ft.) Distant views include the snows of Pumasillo and Salkantay. The Urubamba Valley again becomes visible thousand of feet below. In the distance, the secret city of Machu Picchu is spotted, surrounded by mountains and a barren plain that lies between us and the great city.  We make camp near Wińaywayna Lodge and prepare dinner in anticipation of Day 4 and our final goal.

DAY 4.- WIŃAYWAYNA-MACHUPICCHU.  We arise early for breakfast, eager to reach Macchu Picchu before others do, so we can have it to ourselves for two hours.  Our magical day includes touring the sacred city and an optional hike to Picchu Picchu and a nearby Inca bridge.  We proceed to Aguas Calientes for a dip in the warm spring waters to soothe our muscles and to reflect on our magical journey.  It is possible to spend an optional night in this beatiful tropical climate in the midst of an imposing landscape and return to Cusco by train the next morning Otherwise, we return that evening by train to Cusco.
