The star lives in northern Australia to south Queensland. Its length is about 11cm.

The hen is duller colored then the cock, and has much less red on the face. The song consists of soft humming and chirping and is sung with the tail erect.

River banks with vegetation are the home of these finches. They like to dwell on river banks in rushes, reeds, or thick grass. In keeping with that, provide them with a few vertical perches and not so sturdy smooth branches.

Breeding: The nest is built free standing or in a nest box. It is round, oval, also coned shaped and very sturdy. In the case of poor parents, you can use zebras or societies to foster.

The star is nourished with millet, canary seed, grass seed, green food, soaked seed, soft food, ant pupae and egg food
