SCRABBLE TOURNAMENTS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS

Counter

Scrabble has been receiving encouraging response from the general public representing various sectors in Malaysia.  It is no longer merely a game for kids or for fun; as wrongly viewed by many quarters; but it is now considered a game of wit, cunning and strategy. It has also become an international class game like chess. With proper guidance and support, Scrabble in Malaysia has a great potential to be developed equivalently to the world-class badminton and hockey.

In countries; where English is the mother-tongue; such as US, UK, Australia and many others in the European Continent, Scrabble has been part of the core activity serving as an aid to teaching English. Thailand has adopted similar concepts recently by making Scrabble as one of the aids for teaching English. This fact has been proven when 6000 of Thailand students have been sent every year to participate in Scrabble tournaments/championships at all levels (including international)

We form part of a special project known as ‘Scrabble to Schools’ (S2S) allied with the Malaysian Scrabble Association (MSA) To date, we have been getting overwhelming response from all sectors and supported not only by the Ministry of Education but Ministry of Youth & Sports as well besides the Rotary Clubs and other voluntary bodies/NGOs. The State and District Education Departments have been very supportive of the project as they are well aware of the benefits of playing Scrabble.

Realizing its’ vast potential especially in an effort to create and turn more Malaysian 'scrabblers' into world class champions from as young as 7 years old, we have soft-launched the S2S & give the project a bigger role in an effort to incorporate scrabble into the Malaysian School Culture especially to become one of the teaching aids in learning English.

Our team is supported by a strong team of scrabble enthusiasts enjoying a reputation of 15-30 years experience and have been working hand in hand with Malaysian Scrabble Association. Already strategic efforts have been taken to tie us to other scrabble associations across the globe. To ensure that our operation are fully guided by international standards and regulations, our team are also supported by strong Management Consultants where some of them are 'scrabblers' themselves.

The theme of the project is ‘Bringing Back The Fun of Learning English’ is aimed not only to enhance the command of English Language but to also generally guide the academic society including students to take another step further to master the language proficiently via using the alternative method of 'Scrabbling'. There have been many living proofs around the globe that Scrabble benefits both in Education per se and Personal Development of students including the harmonization of the left and right parts of the brain. In Malaysia, we have identified hundreds of hidden talents waiting only to be highlighted and with proper coaching, these talents may pave their names into the world record!

Names like Zin Putra, Kenrick Ng, Ganesh Asirvartham, Henry Yeo (naming a few) and many more are among most feared names in the world of Malaysian and International Scrabble. You will also be surprised to learn that these very same names have also enjoyed the reputation of becoming best students in their schools (average 10 A's SPM). Every school that we've been, we are shocked to discover that so many 'smart students' putting a high interest in participating in Scrabble Tournaments. Coincidence - you may say - but we have the FACTS!

Our team has been involved in the organizing and co-organizing scrabble related activities including trainings/workshops, tournaments/championships - naming a few :

English in Camp 2005 (organised by Ministry of Education), Ministry of Finance Games, Kumpulan Perubatan Johor, Malaysian Open, MENSA Scrabble Challenge, Media Scrabble Challenge, Security Commission Scrabble Challenge, Hicom Scrabble Challenge, Park Royal Masters, YMCA Scrabble Open, School Competition i.e District, State and Nationals, Bertam World Scrabble Masters (attended by 11 nations), World Scrabble Championship in Kuala Lumpur (Attended by 42 nations), more than 50 schools and institutions of higher learning.

We have also been invited by the Curriculum Unit, MOE to brief State English Language Officers on the benefits of scrabble and a unanimous resolution has been drawn up to consider scrabble becoming part of the English Language Annual Calendar.

This fabulous effort can be part of your organization or schools. You will be coached by international class scrabble consultants like Mr. Nik Zuraik bin Abdul Majid and Mr. Ganesh Asirvatham.

Scrabble Scramble challenge to include foreign players - By NG WEI LOON

Asirvatham: World No. 1 scrabble player

NATIONAL scrabble wizard Ganesh Asirvatham who is currently ranked World No.1 has set the momentum for the game to become more popular.

Following his victory at the Crossway Scrabble Challenge held in Johor in December, the 28-year-old English lecturer at a special language centre in Sunway climbed up to the top of the world standing.

“I stayed ahead of the group that featured five of the top 10 players in the world, which helped to propel my ranking to number one in the world,” said Asirvatham.

The upcoming Scrabble Scramble 2007 to be held at the Great Eastern Mall in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, from March 9 to 11 will be an opportunity for those who aspire to emulate Asirvatham’s success, to polish their skills.

“This is the first time we are taking up the challenge to host a scrabble event.

“We hope the event will also encourage children to learn the game. Although we have a world-class player like Asirvatham, we want to see new faces emerging, said Eventus Asia strategic partnerships director Gaythri Raman.

She said they hoped the event would become an annual affair.

On the opening day, tournament director Song Kim Lian will be hosting a two-hour introduction workshop, starting at 7am, for beginners at the venue.

“Since the competitions will be held on Saturday (March 10) and Sunday (March 11), there will be many activities from noon till 7pm on Friday that include contests and workshops organised by our sponsors,” added Gaythri.

The three-day event can accommodate up to 100 players in three categories - masters, intermediate and beginners.

“Besides the players based in the Klang Valley, players from other states such as Penang and Johor will also be taking part. Competitors from Singapore and the Philippines have also expressed their interest to compete. We are expecting a full turnout with some last-minute entries,” said Gaythri.

The winner in each category will walk away with an Acer notebook.

Besides prizes for the top three winners in each category, the intermediate and beginners categories also offer rewards to competitors with the highest word score and highest game score. 1
