The important thing to remember in combining colour and black and white is that if you use the IMAGE > GREYSCALE tool the programme converts the 24 bit colour file into an 8 bit black and white. Also if you apply Greyscale to a layer it turns the whole pack of layers into B&W.

The simplest way, which I learnt from 'Clivia', is to cut out the portions of the shot you want in either B&W or Colour and save them as a separate layer -- 1 -- and then use the Ctrl A>Ctrl-C>Ctrl-L path to add it to the layer which has been perhaps changed to B&W

This is on a grey background but in PSP if you change it from a background layer to a numbered layer 'Delete' key gives you the chequered back-ground for transparency to see layers below it.

 And importantly changed to a 16Million colors 24 bit image. --- 2 ---

3 ---Another way to get a black and white image is to use HUE and SATURATION both reduced to their minimum values. For a complicated subject where you might make a mistake in selecting parts of the shot to be treated it is good to use an adjustment layer. In this case use LAYERS > ADJUSTMENT LAYER > HUE,SATURATION,AND LIGHTNESS option. Reduce the Hue and Saturation and then use the black brush to remove the effect and correct errors with the white brush. use the black brush to remove the effect and correct errors with the white brush. See ...... Adjustment Layers

Here just the car is in colour by rubbing out it's area in the HSL adjustment layer

Big brother doesn't need the padding to fit the car

For fun, instead of using the HSL adjustment layer go down and try THRESHOLD and for an example see The Girl at the Pagent.
