Reckless Heart

Prologue
Mark Cavanaugh needed to get out of town, and he needed to do so now. He hadnt planned on things turning out this way. Things had gotten out of hand way too fast.

He would have preferred to tell his fiance goodbye and let her know that he loved her, and when things cooled off he would be back. But he couldnt risk it. They were already on his tale, he knew.

He did manage to lose them long enough to drop in the club he co-owned with his best friend, Dan Mitchell, and grab the cash hed stashed in the bottom drawer of his desk.

He made an appearance on the floor, as he always did, to see how business was going and thats when hed spotted them. The two men who were sure to end his life at any moment. Slipping out the back door, he made it to his car and sped away just as the men ran into the alley.

Taking a few wrong turns in hopes of ditching his would be attackers, Mark made it to his apartment building. He pulled into the alley that separated his building from the corner drugstore. Letting the engine run, he climbed from the car.

Standing on the hood of the automobile he reached up and pulled down the ladder, careful not to slip on the wet rungs. Mark made his way to the window and climbed inside his bedroom.

The instant his feet hit the floor, the room filled with light and Mark came face-to-face with his would be attackers.

Hey guys! How did you get in here? Mark asked, acting nonchalant.

We have our ways. His guest answered.

Guess if youre here then Sal knows what I did, Mark stated as more of a statement than a question.

You guessed right.

Im sorry man. But I had no other choice. I had to do something to buy myself more time, Mark pleaded his case.

I know you are. But there comes a time in a mans life when he has to take responsibility for his own actions, he told Mark.

Youre right. So what exactly does Sal want you to do to me? Mark asked, turning toward his dresser to retrieve the 9mm he kept there.

Oh just this.

From behind, one man grabbed Marks right hand as his own held onto the 9 mm gun. Hooking a left around Marks neck, he pressed the barrel of the gun to Marks temple and pulled the trigger.

No sound came from the gun, as hed made sure to put the silencer on before Mark arrived.

Marks body fell to the floor with a thud.

The two men worked quickly, knowing Marks fiance could arrive home at any moment. They made sure Marks finger touched the trigger, leaving only his fingerprints.

Walking to the computer, one man turned it on and called up the document hed typed before Mark arrived home.

I can't live with what Ive done to Dan. I have a disease that can only be cured with my death. I love and will miss you all.
Love, Mark

Leaving the computer on, and being careful not to step in the blood and gray matter, Marks murderers left the apartment building the same way they had entered.

The front door.
