Chapter 8: Travel Through Time

When I arrived in London, I got a hotel room and slept off my jet lag.  I wanted to be well rested for what lay ahead of me.  I didn't know what would happen in the next few days.

When I was completely rested I bought a train ticket for Liverpool.  I enjoyed the train ride; I just loved the English countryside.

When I finally arrived in Liverpool I hailed a taxi and made my way to the Britannia Adelpi Hotel.  I went up to the front desk and gave the lady there my information.

"Oh you're the girl who asked for the Beatle room.  A fan are you?" the lady asked.

Was I? Not really. "I guess you could say that" I replied.

She gave me the keys and I brought my things up to my room.  The decoration was very much in the style of the sixties.  It wasn't psychedelic, but very 60's none the less.  It was perfect; the only things I would have to remove would be the Television and the telephone, which was a touch-tone.

The next thing I did was sit down and try to figure out the time I wanted to go back to.  I knew it had to be sometime in 1961, but I didn't know exactly when.

I got out the Beatle books I had checked out from the library.  I felt a little guilty about taking the books to another country.  But I figured either this time travel thing wouldn't work out and I could go home and return them, or it would work and I wouldn't be there to face the consequences.

I read in one of the books that they played the cavern on Sept. 1st of 1961 with some Jazz bands.  I liked the date, it appealed to me for some reason.  The only problem was that I didn't know what time I would arrive in 1961.  It could be at 11 p.m. and I would miss the entire performance.  So I decided to go back to Aug. 31st of 1961.  This date seemed right to me, so I went with it.

I was anxious to try the time travel out, but I controlled myself and decided to wait until the next day.  It was getting late so I ordered room service and watched the television.  For all I knew that could be the last time I would watch American sitcoms for a long time.  I watched T.V. until 10 p.m., when I went to sleep hoping for an early start in the morning.

My dreams were full of the people I knew and loved.  I saw my parents, and Sandy and her family.  In them I was saying goodbye to all of them.  Usually my dreams are extremely disjointed, but that night they were very clear.  Most of the dreams were spent just talking to my parents.

When I woke up the next morning, I felt a sense of peace.  I was still a little worried about what was going to happen, but for the most part I was ready.

The first thing I did was put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door, so I wouldn't have the maids interrupting me.  Next I moved the television and the telephone into the closet, they just fit with the closet door hanging out a little.

Then I went and got showered, made-up, and dressed.  I wore the dress that I had worn the night I "met" Sir Paul McCartney. It was blue wrap around that would fit in with the time period.

Next I put all of the things I needed in my purse.  They included: my passport, my birth certificate, my college transcript, and the diamonds and gold I needed for money.

I strapped the purse across my chest, so it would be sure to come with me when I traveled.

With all the preparations completed all that was left was to try it out.  So I lay down on the bed and closed my eyes and began.

"August 31, 1961, August 31, 1961, August 31, 1961, August 31, 1961, August 31, 1961, August 31, 1961, August 31, 1961, August 31, 1961." I repeated over and over again.

I kept doing it for about thirty minutes and nothing happened.  I figured I wasn't concentrating enough, so I tried again for another thirty minutes.  Still nothing.

I got out of bed and went to get the book "Somewhere In Time".  As I was rummaging through my bag to find it, I came across the locket Paul had given me.  I picked it up and held it.  I was overwhelmed by the urge to go back to the bed and try again. So, I dropped the locket and I made my way back to the bed.

I lay back down, closed my eyes, and began my chant.  This time I completely concentrated on Paul.

I was only laying there for what seemed like a second.  Suddenly I felt like I was floating.  It scared me so I opened my eyes.

At first I was disappointed because it did not seem to have worked.  But then I began noticing things.

The bedspread I was sitting on had been green, but now it was blue.  In fact the entire room was different.  I looked down and saw some clothes that were not mine on the floor.

My first reaction was elation; I had done it I had time traveled.  My second reaction was fear; I had to get out of that hotel room.  Someone else obviously occupied this room.

I was heading to the door when the doorknob started to jiggle.  I immediately dropped to the floor and rolled under the bed.

I could hear the door open and close and then I saw a pair of brown shoes.  I prayed that the person in question would not stay very long.  Luckily for me he didn't, he just picked up a scarf off the floor and left.

I waited five minutes, and then I rolled out from under the bed.  I quickly exited the room and made my way to the lobby. I went up to the man behind the counter and asked him the question I knew he would look at me crazy for, but I had to know.

"What year is this?"
