The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Love holds no boundaries, even time.
Love and the space-time continuum. Not your ordinary formula for a best-selling novel. But for Audrey Niffenegger, it worked. Big time.
Most girls dream of having a responsible, caring and intelligent husband, who goes home a t 6 p.m. sharp. Clare Abshire, an artist from Michigan is married to Henry DeTamble, a librarian from Chicago. Thery were married when she was 22 and he was 30, and they met when she was six and he was 36.
Impossible right? Henry suffers from the rarest genetic disorder, where his genetic clock resets often and he is transported back to his past and into his future. Its not science fiction. Far from it, actually. It is a very real love story between two realistic characters. The time-travelling part is unobtrusive, where Henry disappears in a blink of an eye. Claire is there, ever the dutiful wife, always waiting and worrying.
First, it gets you confused. You have to flip the pages back and forth to remember the precise date and pacing of the story. Somewhere near the middle, you will realize the flow and eagerly wait for the next time and place Henry travels to. You will feel the pains and joys with the sharp words and vivid pictures Niffenegger has created. You cant put the book down for fear of losing their train of thought. Both struggle to lead normal lives, Henry, travelling back and forth but his love unwavering. Clare, pretending shes okay with the leaving and waiting, always worrying about her love.
The story is a lethal combination. It has its heart-rending moments, lustful moments, comical and exultant moments, all weaved in to more than five hundred pages of fictional treasure. The best book to read for a whole day of lazing around, always with a mug of hot chocolate, blankets and the rain. |
