Nikita walked slowly down the street admiring the brisk October afternoon and watching the few children in the city loading into their parent's cars in full costume. They were, no doubt, going off to some quiet suburb or other family's houses for trick-or-treat. The little boy dressed in black with sunglasses hit Nikita a little odd, but she quickly realized he was dressed as one of the "Men In Black" from the movie that had been such a hit with all the city kids earlier this year.
Nikita never celebrated holidays like Halloween
when she was young. She had always loved the holiday, but never
remembered going trick-or-treating or ever attending any parties.
Michael had told her once that he never celebrated holidays. She
remembered how sad that made her, especially when she realized
neither did she. She knew there were reasons, but she did not
like to dwell on her childhood's shortcomings. Maybe, she mused,
that was why she was so child-like now? Because she couldn't
enjoy it when she was young? "Always the rebel" she
said quietly to herself with a laugh.
She stood on the bridge across from her apartment building for a
while before completing her walk home. As she threw rocks and
fallen leaves into the water below she thought about how much she
wanted a normal life, a safe life outside, children of her own to
take trick-or-treating....
Nikita's phone rang, interrupting her daydreams. On a sudden urge
(and also since she knew who was calling) she answered...
"Jo's Pizza, will this be take out or delivery?"
She waited through a long pause and then...
"Josephine"
"I know, I know, the regular, special delivery"
She laughed a little "be there in a
few." She hung up the phone laughing. She could tell by the
pause and the slight upward tone of his voice that she had got
him. Maybe she could have fun this Halloween after all!
After the briefing Michael, Nikita, and Birkoff
were walking down the hallway to Madeline's office. Nikita and
Birkoff walked several feet behind Michael. Michael could hear
them whispering and giggling. At first he thought they were
talking about him, so he stopped and waited on them. He found out
they were talking about costumes.
Nikita liked his mission profile. The three of them were to going
to a Halloween ball at Govenor Riley's mansion. Birkoff was to
slip in and check his files. It was a routine mission. Section
had "visited" the good govenor several times ever since
he had been connected to some terrorist hits earlier in the year.
Michael and Nikita always went as a
couple: the informant on Riley's European accounts and his model
girlfriend.
Govenor Riley was a very materialistic and vein man who conducted
business well, but was often guilty of personal excess. He always
throws lavish events and parties in his own honor and for any
ocasion. His lifestyle had made it easy for Section to check up
on him.
That is, until the last mission.
This time they had to be extremely careful. Last time Nikita had
been seen comig out of Riley's office. She did not know she had
been seen until the debrief where she got to watch the tapes of
the mission. A guard had seen her, but did not pursue. Section
concluded that he had checked the office and found nothing out of
place or tampered with, so he didn't interrupt the party.
This time they were going in with, at Madeline's request,
Birkoff.
They had a good story planned to excuse Nikita's actions from
last time. Since they knew they would be under heavy scrutiny
tonight if the guard had mentioned this to Riley, Birkoff would
do all the work. Michael and Nikita were to take surveilance
only.
The three of them entered Madeline's office to find her sitting
contently at her desk. "I was going to escort you to
wardrobe.." she observed all three as the stood obediently
before her "..but I have changed my mind." Birkoff
looked at Michael to see his response (none, of course), what was
going on? Madeline continued " You all know this is a
routine mission, I am confident we will succeed.. I want you to
be comfortable, above all." She looked directly at Nikita,
knowing she was insecure about the last mission. "This is a
costume ball,.. go pick your costumes, transport leaves in 30
minutes." she smiled slightly.
Madeline was feeling very motherly as she handed her oldest the
wardrobe room key.
Michael took the key looking off then back at her, not beleiving
that she, of all people, was going to make this into an event. He
acceped it and turned to lead the others out. Madeline laughed
slightly to herself as she watched them leave. She clicked on her
monior and switched to watch the wardrobe room, "This should
be good" she smiled.
Once outside of Madelines office Nikita and Birkoff pushed each
other in disbeleif. "That is too weird" Birkoff
whispered "she's either flipped her wig or this is a
test!" He chuckled a second before meeting Nikita's eyes in
fear. Both knew the seriousness of Madelines tests.
Nikita tried to blow it off, "Ha,ha yeah, pick a stupid
costume and you're dead, pretty funny hey Michael?" she
asked trying to get him to join them.
"This is no test...or a game, she is just too busy." he
professionally answered.
Nikita and Birkoff rolled their eyes at each other as Micael
passed them to open the door.
"It's a test" Nikita mouthed, smiling to Birkoff. He
nodded empatically returning the smile.
They entered the room as Michael held open the door. He grinned
as Nikita walked past. "I need to lighten up" he
thought to himself. As if on cue, Nikita voiced the same opinion.
"Michael, lighten up, we never have any fun..." she
looked at him with wide-eyes"... I know I'll pick your
costume and you pick mine?"
Michael agreed with a shrug and a nod. What had he gotten himself
into?
Birkoff already had his costume picked out and had it on. He was
a green alien with big black eyes and a long black robe. He
glowed in the dark. It was easy to get in and out of if he needed
to and he had always had a soft spot for science-fiction.
Nikita complimented his choice "Wow! that's great! You're
quick!" Birkoff laughed a little and twirled for Nikita as
she applauded him and whistled. Michael huffed and grinned
watching the two dance.
"Come on Michael" Madeline said poking his head on her
monitor screen. She had hoped this would relax him, knowing how
strung out he had been.
Nikita tried on three costumes, all of which she hated. The first
was a boring nurses outfit. It was ugly and uncomfortable. The
second was a hippie, she liked it, but felt silly because Michael
and Birkoff had agreed it was too much like her normal attire.
The third was a really stupid bat costume with a furry purple
bodysuit and rubber webbed wings. She could not quit laughing in
it. She swooped down on Birkoff mocking a bat, and he screamed- -
really loud. They all laughed at him - he could be really funny.
Birkoff smiled at Nikita, Michael was laughng!
"Good boy" Nikita thought as she patted Birkoff on the
back while walking away.
Finally she came out in a sexy pirate costume. It was her. She
had on a short black and white stripe ragged skirt with black
fishnet stockings that magnified her long legs. A red sash around
her waist. The sleeves to her white ruffled blouse were long and
poofy, topped off with a black leather vest laced tightly up the
front , pushing her chest
upward and showing more clevage than any of them (even Nikita)
knew that she had. She finished it off with a black scrap
headband and thigh high black leather stilletto heel boots, and
of course, a sword.
Birkoff coughed "You aren't wearing that !! ... are
you??"
"Yes," Michael smiled ".. she is."
Nikita smiled at Michael's approval. "Well it's only fare
that I have a suitable matie aye?" She winked as she threw
Michael a wad of clothing. He examined it briefly, then looked at
her skeptically and left to change.
Michael came out in full gear. His royal blue silk pants were
tucked into his black leather buckle-topped boots. His sword was
fastened at his side with a black leather holster. His shirt like
Nikita's was white with ruffles and laces, topped off with a red
coat that came to his knees, trimmed in gold with large cuffs and
a large lapel. He also wore a large black hat with a skull and
crossbones embroidered on the bill.
"Whoa my God! It's the technicolor Michael!" Nikita
yelled while hiding her eyes from all the colors Michael would
never wear. Birkoff laughed and followed lead shielding his eyes
with a shout.
"You don't approve?" Michael asked.
"YES, yes you're wonderful.." Nikita exclaimed "..
just one thing."
She stood and walked over to him long and sultry. Birkoff
grimaced and cocked his head at her as she put on this display.
She ran her hands up his body and leaned in close to him, inches
from his lips. When she clamped on the two gold hoop earings he
jumped and flinched - it being a new kind of pain. After
recovering he smirked at her. She ran her hands back down to his
chest and ripped his shirt open bearing his magnificent chest.
"Now you're authentic" she winked.
Michael raised his chin and eyebrows in amusement. His hands were
already on her hips. In a sudden motion he ripped her skirt up
the side to bear her hip and garters. He grinned briefly and
walked away from her. She turned to Birkoff in amazement showing
him what he had done.
Birkoff laughed and pointed at her. She looked up after Michael
with that "I'm going to get you" look in her eyes.
"Let's go" Michael said. At that moment the others
snapped into attention knowing the mission was at hand. They all
knew fun was over and left for the transport.
Walter was waiting with their equiptment, he laughed when he saw
the three coming. "Oh man, and I thought I had seen it
all!" he shook his head handing Michael their supplies.
"I love it, its Blackbeard meets E.T.!" he gave Birkoff
a nudge as he went to the van. "You kids have fun - don't
talk to strangers and check your candy before you eat
it!!" He laughed as Birkoff and Michael both smiled back at
him.
Nikita walked by Walter smiling over her shoulder. Walter looked
her over. "Damn, I'm getting too old for this place."
"Bye Walter" she pouted as she got into the van.
"Be careful!" He yelled in all seriousness.
"Please." he added to ensure they knew his sincerity.
Nikita blew him a kiss as Michael pulled the door shut.
After the debrief Nikita grabbed her clothes before heading home.
Michael stopped her.
"Join me for coffee?" he asked.
Nikita smied. "Only if we can go as we are." They had
already had a fairly good evening: Michael was relaxing, the
mission was successful, ... she figured it did not hurt to ask.
He huffed a split second in disbelief, and with a twinkle in his
eye and hat in hand he bowed to her, pirate style.
"Aye, how could I tell m'lady no?" he
answered in an awkward french-piratey accent.
Nikita loved it, she covered her mouth in surprise at his
actions. She glanced around to see Madeline around the corner,
she smiled before she walked away. Nikitia drew her hands away
from her mouth with tears in
her eyes and whispered "Thank you."
They went to coffee, then to Nikita's apartment where they sat on
the front steps and handed out candy to what few
trick-or-treaters she had. Michael enjoyed watching her with the
kids. He wondered if he would ever see her take a little Nikita
or a little Michael trick-or-treating.
Nikita saw the far off look in his eyes and waved her hand in
front of him to get his attention.
"Sleepy?" she asked.
"Yeah." he nodded, rubbing his eyes.
"Well I was thinking that it is about time we got out of
these clothes?" she asked.
Michael looked up at her quickly to see her grinning from ear to
ear with a mischevious look on her face.
"She's blunt and I like it.." he
thought to himself.
"Absolutely, m'lady" he whispered in pirate tone,
kissing her before they left for upstairs.
That night they celebrated their first Halloween... together.
