Course Description: This course is designed to improve your writing.  We will be focusing on the different types of essays.  During this course, we will be working to improve on grammar, mechanics, content, originality, etc.

Attendance: During the summer sessions, 4 or more unexcused absences will lower ;your course grade by one letter.  A valid verifiable excus includes:  illness, serious family emergency, college business, and inclemental weather.
Class attendance is mandatory and habitual tardiness is unacceptable.  Please make arrangements to be in class on time.
NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED, WITHOUT PRIER ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE INSTRUCTOR.

Course Requirements:
1Reading:  You are expected to do all assigned reading before class time.
2.  Papers:  Students completing this course should write 5 essays.  Each paper should be 2-3 pages in length.  These papers will be graded on strength, originality, and support of your thesis.  You will be able to choose your own topic, however; topics must be approved by me.  Format of papers:  Typed or word-processed, double spaced, 12 or 14 font, name and course listed at the top of the page.  Keep a copy of your work.
3.  Examinations:  There will be 2 two hour final exam.  There will be several question concerning the different types of essay you will be required to write in class and you will also be required to write an essay.  The final exam cannot be made up.
4.  Quizzes:  As much as possible, I like to conduct this class as a seminar so that students have the maximum opportunity to express their views and to interact with the material, their peers, and the instructor.  THIS REQUIRES THAT YOU READ THE ASSIGNED MATERIAL BEFORE YOU COME TO CLASS.  In this regard there will be unannounced quizzes given throughout the semester.  Quizzes will be given during the first ten minutes of class and cannot be made up. 

Grading:  Anticipated points for the various course requirements are:


Paper 1            100 points
Paper 2            100 points
Paper 3            100 points
Paper 4            100 points
Paper 5            100  points
Final Exam        Pass/Fail
Quizzes             approximately 10 points each

These points will produce a raw grade that may be raised or lowered one letter according to the quality of the student's class participation and attendance.

Academic Dishonesty:  Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses against academic integrity.  Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing will recieve a 0 for the test or paper.  If students have questions about what constitutes plagiarism, they should ask me immediately.

Students with Disabilities:  Any student with a disability that might require accommodation should contact me as soon as possible.  Confidentiality will be maintained, and every effort will be made to meet that student's needs.
