The sailing military linear ships were largest sailing-ships in the world. In 1841 with slips in Nikolaev the linear ship " Twelve apostles " constructed by the engineer Chernyavsky S.I. It was the ship by displacement 5500 т, length 63 м, width 18 m. On it 132 cannons were established. The large area of sails allowed it to develop speed up to 10 units. The ship was very beautiful. Not without reason known artist I.K. Ayvazovsky in eight pictures has represented " Twelve apostles " on November 18, 1853 the ships of this series participated in famous battle with Sinop - last afraid of sailing military fleet. Fire of their cannons for twenty minutes has destroyed all Turkish fleet.
