In August, 1848 Kronstadt there was a transport "Baikal" under command the captain - Lieutenant G.I. Nevelskoy in expedition on Far East. The way ran through Atlantic, cape Gorn, and Pacific Ocean. In May, 1849 "Baikal" has reached Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Further G.I. Nevelskoy heads for Sakhalin and comes to a conclusion, that it is an island. So the Tatar strait between continent and island Sakhalin was opened. Then have lead research of a mouth of Amur and have found out, that it is navigable.

The transport "Baikal" is constructed on shipyard «Borgetrem and Co « in Gelsingforse. It was small two-mast sail-ship by displacement 477 ò. Length - 28, 5 ì, width - 7,38 ì, deposit - 3,87 m. The speed made it 8, 5 units, arms - 6 guns, crew 47 persons.
