In first half XIX centuries occur a new type of the trade ship - clipper. The sharp form of its low case, narrow and long, the huge sails and some decrease cargo capacity have given amazing effect: any sailing-ship could not even come nearer to clipper on speed of a course (18-20 units). For it is the ship and has received the name, which means “cutting tops of waves ". Most first clippers have appeared at east coast of America. The New York ship-building firm "Smite and Damon" in 1845 builds a unusual vessel "Rainbow" intended specially for trade tea in China. Today "Rainbow", designed D.U. Griffith, consider as first present tea clipper. The hull of clipper was so extended, that the attitude of its length to width reached up to 7:1. Length "Rainbow" - 65,4 ì, width - 7,8 ì, area of sails - 2850 sq. ì, carrying capacity - 1800 ò.
