This is all the information that I can piece together on Nijigen - The Other World. Most of it was taken from the creator in one of his many frothful ravings; much of which I assume isn't in the context he intended. However, it's a start, and a lot of the story is more interesting to reveal for yourself, anyway.

Background
Nijigen started in 2002, as a series of small updates to an existing roleplay chat. Its popularity among the existing chat community was immense, as everyone was enjoying the new level of online roleplay. The game itself is distributed in arcs, which can generally only be experienced once. The beginning of a new arc is often marked by massive amounts of new users, and great confusion among the existing community. Much like traditional online roleplay, events can occur at any given time, and the balance of power is ever shifting.
Player Guide
Players begin in one of multiple towns, chosen at random by the server. Having stepped through the portal - a mystical device which can phase and fuse worlds - characters start with very little to their name, save a strap of clothing to cover their indecencies. With very little to your name, your first task is to find a flow of income, and a place within the world.

The introduction to the storyline is somewhat subliminal, as is your character's relationship to the new world, and the lands past the portal. Serious players usually make a distinction between the two, but this isn't necessary if your agenda doesn't include a moment in the spotlight.

However, it's always a good idea to have a decent profile set up, or possibly a website. Giving other users something to work with when conversing with you will go a long way in attempts to oust you.
Basic Storyline
Nijigen is a world connected to many other planes of existence - not all of which are friendly. The populace of the world comes more from those who step through the one-way portals than it does from evolutionary domination, although those who first step through often erect civilizations akin to their previous world. New inhabitants from other realms, generally family-less ne'er-do-wells, wander the continents in search of money. With little more to their name than some clothing, these captive tourists become the next generation of the society. Though the population influx generally leaves people confused, survival is still a necessity, and there is no shortage of jobs to be done. From there the stage is set, and from therein the world lives on.
