The Last War -

chapter 4

Shortly after my 18th birthday I began to feel the pull to explore the world. So with this in mind I
said good-bye to my mother and left home never to return. Of course, there was one small problem. I had no idea where to go. I decided to let fate lead he way. Little did I know fate was always guiding me. I drew four letters on the ground. N, S, E, W. I took a quarter out of my pocket and flipped it into the air. It seemed to take forever to land, but when it finally came to rest on the ground, it had landed directly on the W. So it was decided. I would head west. I drove west for weeks. Taking my time, seeing different cities, different women, everything I could.

One day I pulled into this little middle-of-nowhere town and decided to enjoy my last five dollars on lunch. While I was eating a women set a note on my table, and left the diner. I found this woman
strangely familiar. She was also the most attractive woman I have ever seen, but her eyes caught my attention. They were stone cold, almost as if she felt no emotions. I had hoped I would see her again. Little did I know I would. The note was not her number, but a warning.

STOP THIS JOURNEY AND GO HOME BOY

After reading this I ran outside and looked around for her, but she was gone. I returned to my table
and decided it must have been a bad joke. I also decided it was time to continue down the road. So I finished my meal, paid my bill, and left town.

I remember that at about this time I had another dream. This one was different somehow. It was
almost real. There were four people standing in a circle. They were calling out to me. They wanted
me to join them. I woke up and as I had done before I brushed it off, as if it was nothing.

As luck would have it the next town on the map was New Orleans. It was also Mardi Gras. Lucky
me. I found a place to park my car and went drinking. Not easy when you're broke, but lucky for
me I was good at con... er, talking someone out of a few dollars. About two days later I was
standing there (well, it wasn't actually standing, but I digress), having a good time, when I saw the
woman from the diner. I began to walk towards her. She saw me coming and began to run. I began
to chase her through the crowd. She suddenly turned down an alley. When I came around the corner she was gone. The alley was a dead end with no doors. She had nowhere to go, but she was gone. I was about ot turn around when something caught my attention. It was a ring. It was made of silver and had this odd symbol on it. The symbol was like a profile of a face done by Picasso. There was also a red triangle that pointed to the top of the neck. I don't know how, but I knew it was hers. I picked it up and took it with me.

I had enough fun for the day and went back to my car to get some sleep. I couldn't sleep though. I
kept wondering how that mysterious woman had gotten away from me not once but twice...

(Next time William finds out more about this mysterious woman and her ring.)
