 Modern Submarines of War

Document by Ian Campbell on September 30, 2001

The United States lead the submarine since World War II building some of the most technology advanced naval vessels on Earth. Submarines were used to do operations with the protection of not being seen. These ships were deadly to destroyers since they were two small to be hit directly. After World War II submarines were used as a marker defending her territory. Today modern submarines do the same thing.

 The first Submarines

Submarines where being built in the late 1700s when the first vessel to go under water accorded without sinking. But the first man be under water in a submarine accorded in the 1890s. But the uses of submarines come around until around the end of World War I.

 USS Los Angeles (www.warships1.com)

One of the most advanced submarines in the world is the Los Angeles Class. The USS Los Angeles was the first submarine that spread more then a city block long. If you took a picture of this submarine, a man would only be 1/4 the length of your finger. This is how huge these underwater vessels are. With light metal armor it could move through the icebergs of the Arctic Ocean. The LA Class ships support 130 crewmen. Each crewman is apart of groups that make up a team, There are four groups. Navigation, Arsenal and Engineering and medical units aboard. The three parts of the Arsenal (Weapons Unit) are that on patrol is to move weapons, another to check them and the last to maintain all the torpedoes In Engineering, You have a patrol that welds and maintains the ship, the other is the steam turbine operations.

 The Weapons

The Los Angeles and her predecessors have many powerful weapons aboard. One of the most powerful is the Tomahawk cruise missile. This missile is launch when the ship surfaces and it travels hundreds of miles away. The missiles can be driven or destroyed by satellite or by the ship it self. The submarine also carries up to 60 depth mines and ADCAP torpedoes. (Shallow water torpedoes)

 The Power

The Los Angeles can twin steam Turbines that give the ship indefinite power for up to 13 years. The nuclear technology is state-of-the-art and can make the submarine underwater move 30 knots making them the fastest underwater vessels in the world. For a backup source LA has a diesel engine.

Ship titles. Every submarine made before 1987 have been decommissioned in May 1999. These ships are always recycled or “scraped” after the ship was become to dangerous to run. Remember all ships are made of nuclear counterparts.

USS ALBUQUERQUE

The USS Albuquerque is a Los Angeles attack submarine. The commissioning of this nuclear ran carrier happened 17 years ago in 1983. This was the 20th year anniverity where the 1st Albuquerque drifted. This is one example of the ship still in survive in the US. The ship is over 360 feet long. This ship, like most others in her class weighs over 690 thousand tons. She is a example of a newer ship in the same class with updated nuclear technology.

Other Los Angeles Class Submarines. As the submarines get newer and newer the are built better then the last but are used for the same purpose. These are some of the 63 that existed.

USS GREENFIELD

http://www.cpf.navy.mil/greenevillenews.html

The USS Greenfield is one of the latest submarines built in America. She is a Los Angeles Class Submarine that took over 4 years to build and commissioned in 1996. She is one of the most stealth like submarine in existence used mainly for search and rescue operations. She usually has missions from the USA to Guam, Korea and Japan regularly, but hasn’t been in the serious act of war missions like the Los Angeles. She has some of the newest nuclear technology available. Computer Technology has also been enhanced. I read that the ship has a DOD system that stands for Department of Defense. It is a computer link that observes corpsmen in their duties, and if they try to program it or do something that their not suppose to the computer would alert the commanding officer.

Submarines are measured in what extra machinery they have aboard. Light displacement is important because the more the ship has aboard without comprising speed is a good thing. Some of this includes fluids aboard the ship and anything that would say in the ship as long as it exists. The USS Greenfield can carry 6000 tons of extra “ballast”. But the actual dead weight is about 900 tons. Dead weight is the difference between the Light displacement divided by the “ready for mission with all hands aboard” weight.

SEAWOLF CLASS - Becoming famous.

Throughout naval history there are currently 4 submarines that went under the name Sea Wolf The early 20th century class was the USS Sea Wolf (also called USS 28) Which was in service for seven years and sunk from a on board fire. The seawolf was later found by a diver in 1992.

The second Seawolf to be commissioned was deployed in 1939 in the time of World War II. In October 03, 1944 the USS Seawolf was transporting US troops to Samar. But while joined with the USS Narwell who both supposedly changed courses to help the USS Shelton. The USS Shelton was under attack from an enemy destroyer and submarine (???) When the 3 allied ships set off there positions with the unknown USS. Roswell, the Seawolf didn't. It is thought that all ships were attacking the Seawolf instead of the enemy vessel. The enemy ship confirmed to be the Japanese Sub, RO-41 returned safely to Japan.

The 3rd Seawolf was the 2nd nuclear submarine the US ever built. Even though she never was in combat, the USS 575 became the first underwater vessile to stay submerged for a whole month. She was re commissioned 10 years later in 1960 to bring information back and forth to the Mediterranean Sea. There she joined the USS Enterprise again to gather intelligence but was never attacked. Twenty years later she was decommissioned from the navy with a total of 4 Battle Efficient (”E” for Engineering excellence)

The 4th and present Seawolf commissioned only 10 years ago. The “Seawolf Class” is made up of three vessels that are quieter then the Los Angeles and her followers and much more maneuverable. Even though one of the most expensive submarines the US produced, is also the most advanced. The USS Seawolf (SSN 21) is very light - weighting ¼ of the Los Angeles. The US hasn’t given a description of what the vessel missions were or air. The USS Connecticut (December 1998) is called the most capable USS submarine. The sub despite its size is more capable of torpedo launching then the Los Angeles, which is now the US naval submarine of choice. Like the Los Angeles class, the 3 vessels can also carry Tomahawk long-range torpedoes or the Mark 28.

 Weapons

Mark 28(used as general name for all torpedoes) is the US navys most powerful torpedo that is still improving. One of these torpedoes can hit a target up to five miles away while underwater. This torpedo is self guided to its destination on contact. The expected life of the torpedo is expected to last 15 more years. There are four types of mark torpedoes. Mark 28 is going out of service replaced by better less expensive torpedoes of the same class - Mark 46, 48, 50.

Mark 48 - A high maneuverable torpedo used in 20 years of service. The oldest torpedo and heaviest still in use.

Mark 46 - Long range self guided torpedo that is lightweight (170 lbs) and was the most used weapon used in the cold wars.

Mark 50 - An alterative to Mark 46 which is lighter and more stable. Mark 50 is expected to outlast all current marks in service.

Tomahawk cruise missiles - The super weapon of the US. These types of missiles can travel 800 miles from deployment. Tomahawk was commissioned in 1989 and used in the Gulf War in 1991. Each missile is 19 feet long and weights 3.5 thousand lbs. Every one can travel at 500 miles per hour. The explosives on these weapons are equivalent of 1000 pounds of TNT, enough to knock out a small military base.

The new breed is going to replace all the Los Angeles Ships someday. The smaller submarine has as much if not more armor then many of the Los Angeles. If you seen Red October you would know what I mean. The caterpillar propulsion system is reality now. The Seawolf can pump water and use it to accelerate. This is very helpful since it wouldn’t sound like a submarine but an undersea mammal breathing.

 VIRGINIA CLASS

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/nssn.htm

Interesting Note - The Joint Chief's of Staff wants at least 10 to 12 submarines with Seawolf-quality stealthiness by 2012. Which made the Navy create the speculations of the Virginia Class Submarine (1996). The US in very interested and needs about 2.4 billion dollars to make a new ship. The US has gathered a 2 billion dollars to upgrading current ships - or - use that plus more to increase USS Virginia and USS Texas, USS Jimmy Carters production which could supply the new breed of submarine. This decission will, to balance the budget, have to decommission of older vessels in the US fleet.

This class is the third submarine type yet to be watching over United States boundaries. The class is called Virginia. These ships will be able to do much as the same as the Seawolf but will be able to operate under shallow operations like anti-aircraft fire operations and things like that. The new ships will have vertical surfacing tactics. The armor on ship of today can take rapid water pressure difference unlike submarines in World War II. The Virginia and her two sister ships the USS Texas and USS (???) Like most naval ships of today, stealth is everything. This ship is curved from front to end much like the Seawolf. The Virginia is a enhanced Seawolf with improved surface. The Production rate of the Virginia is 1/3 that it took to design and put to together ships 10 years ago. The USS. Virginia (SSN 774) will be commissioned the same time the USS Jimmy Carter will be.

Russia's Modern Submarines

“Typhoon Class” 941 Akula Nuclear Submarine

With only a limited bugget over the United States Russia has seemed to be out of date. But Russian Naval Submarines I think are surprisedly up to date. In the Cold Wars when Russia was under siege from the US. The Code named project Typhoon was created. The submarine now known as the Akula Class is still in existence. To retain many of their subs, the Russians asked the UN and the United States for help. The deal was that they scrap there current Pr - 941s (another USSR submarine). The Typhoon still lives on as the only surviving Russian Submarine to date. The TK. 208 is a huge submarine which is mainly man-powered with far less electrical equipment then the current USS submarines. One of the reasons they had to be so huge. The Tycoon series is about the size of a World War II carrier.

 Power

Even though lacking power to new United States Nuclear Subs, the Tycoon has the basic structure and power of the USS Seawolf. The PK class included two steam turbine power plants which together produced a 100,000 horse power propeller. The power could last crewmen only 90 days at a time, but could keep a crew alive for 1 more month.

 Weaponry

The Akulas could only held 1 kind of torpedo, the R-39.

With only one kind of submarine do date the Russians seriously need to get there act together (as long as they aren't against us.) The technology there is nearly a decade behind the United States. Russian has smaller submarines in service. The Six Akulas were decommissioned in 1992 but are may be recommissioned in a year to be in service until the year 2010. Probably enough time for the Russians as a republic to get organized.
