Tools of a Witch:

Have you ever heard the saying that to do the job correctly you have to have the right tool?
Well the same holds true for a witch to do the job right you have to use the right tool in the right way to get the desired effect.  So we are going to have to talk about the tools you need.

However, the first thing you have to understand if that you - yourself - the witch; is the greatest tool there is.  Your intentions, wants and desires will power a cast/rite/ritual/invocation better than an tool you can every buy or craft.  The simple truth is you are the be all and the end all of it - the power is fuel by you, not your athame or your wand.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Some of the basic tools are witchcraft are as follows:

ATHAME:
It's pronounced ATH -a-may which takes a while to get used to saying so you can always go with knife.   Which is exactly what it is a small knife that should be personal to you.  I have my father's pocketknife and it works well for me.  It doesn't have to be sharp you aren't stabbing anyone or anything with it.  It is used to cast the circle and it is associated with the South or Fire.

THE BROOM:
Relax you don't have to fly on it!  The broom is used simply to cleanse the circle or can be put on the outside of your home to keep away negative energy.

THE BELL:
A bell is not used very often but I do use it to ring the spirits in.  Sometimes, I like to give my castings that formal touch.

THE CAULDRON:
The cauldron represents the goddess - bounty and blessings.  This tool can be used for many things that need to be contained during a cast, such as water, fire, sand and so on.  You don't have to go out and spend a ton of money use an old electric wok or some occult stores do carry resonably priced smaller cauldrons.  Associated with West or Water.

THE CHALICE:
This is your goblet, must are made out of pewter, silver, ceramic or glass; although not lead crystal because of the Saturn energies.  It is a feminine tool associated with West or Water.  Don't forget after every circle to take the remainder of the wine/juice outside to be poured into the ground as an offering.

THE PENTACLE:
A disc or metal plate that is inscribed with a pentagram and used to for consencrating and focus.  You can make your own from painted tile, cardboard or stiff paper.  Associated with the  Female North and the element Earth.

THE SWORD:
This can be used in place of the athame.

THE WAND:
The wand is used to cast the circle and direct magickal energies.  It is traditionally made out of wood but can also be made out of glass copper or silver.  Remember that different trees have different magickal properties so you may want to ask the tree you feel most intuned with to borrow one of it's branches.  Associated with the male East and the element Air.
____________________________________________________________________________________
Now this is just an overview of the most common tools used there are more but you will find these are what you use the most.  All tools must be cleansed and dedicated to the service of your Deity.  For the cleansing pick the herbs that you feel you want your tool to have the most magickal properties of, boil some water with the herbs in it and if possible soak your tool in them while telling the Deity that you dedicate this tool for use in their service.  Wrap the tool in a clean cloth and put it away until the next full moon when it will be charged and ready for use.
All of your tools should be personal to you and for your use only, unless you grant permission for another to use them.  You do not have to have the fanciest tools on the block to be the best witch because as I have already mentioned you are the best tool you have.  Your dedication to the craft will always serve you first and foremost.

Now that all of this is said and done I wish you many years of happiness on your journey of discovery.  There is something new to learn all the time as we increase our skills and knowledge.  Never be afraid or ashamed if you feel a cast has gone horribly wrong or you used the wrong tool, wrong incense, wrong colour candle - most everything is fixable as long as your intentions are clear and you believe in what you are doing.  Spells go wrong, it happens more often then you might think, sometimes we just aren't meant to change our destiny or that of someone else for a higher purpose that may not be readily apparent.  But never give up hope and never stop trying, for it takes time to learn and trial and error may come in handy for another time.  If what you wanted to accomplish didn't work change the spell a bit but it can take up to 6 months to see any result; if you don't see a result within 6 months chances are you never will and weren't meant to.
