Nighmare Reviews- Problems in Slayers Fanfiction

My main problems in Slayers fanfiction is grammar. You have an Enter key people. It makes a break between paragraphs. Use it! Another problem is the lack of emotion. That may be by trying to rush the story, trying to get out all the plot points quickly. Please, take your time. Completely shape your characters, and give them emotions. Give the characters flaws too. If you like Filia, do not make her the perfect Ryuzoku girl who only gets angry around Xellos. Give her real emotions, and follow through all of them. Fine, she is angry. Why? What is going on in her head? Why is she angry? Is it because she feels something else, but has to cover it up with anger? Does she truly hate Xellos? Please, flesh out your story with reality.

Flaws that bug me? I don't really like... well, now that I think of it I
really don't have any real pet peeves with fanfic.

Flaws or things that really irk me. The top of the list would be easy to
spot grammar, a lot, not alot is the only one that really gets me.
Otherwise I'm not expecting perfect grammar since this is just for fun, I
don't check my stuff for mistakes most of the time. Second thing would be,
talk and talk and talk with no end in sight and the plot is not going
anywhere. Self insert, nuff said. Pair a couple up and try to shove it
down our throats, or the whole point in the fic is to put those two
characters together and to convince others they're great together. No plot
(have I said that already?) The characters went WAY OOC, its not Slayers
anymore, just characters with their names. Being mean to any characters for
no reasons, its not funny, its not important to the plot. I think there is
one or two more, but I forgot.

What I hate...*taps chin* Well to tell you the truth, I'm pretty easy when it comes right down to it. But I do have a few things that annoy me (and you don't want to see me annoyed *smiles sweetly*).
For starters, simple spelling mistakes. Don't get me wrong, I can't spell worth crap, but come on people! That's what they made DICTIONARIES and SPELL CHECK for!!!! Oh, and remember, single 'I's ARE capitalized!
Also, I don't like fics that are really OCC without reason. I can live it though. Heck, I'll even offer to read it over myself to help point it out and fix it! But, if you're writing Fanfiction, then should have watched the tapes, so you all know how they act. I think that's my big problem with Slayers Fanfiction. Well, that and extreme cheesiness. That's about it. Like I said! Nothing big! *smiles innocently*

What bugs me... typos, bad grammar, bad formatting, glaring and/or not
well-explained OOC'ness, Amelia (*cough* did I say that?),
overly-bastardized Xelloss (Or any character...), Zel/Amelia, Lina/Amelia,
REALLY REALLY Xell/Amelia.. And to a lesser extent, Japanese words that I
have to grab my dictionary to translate.
But I'll read it anyway. Unless the grammar is so bad that I can't stand
it. ^_^

The flaws that would bug me in Slayers fanfics? I can't really say, I will let you know (honestly and tactfully) if there is a part in the fanfic that strikes me as wrong. I will offer a great deal of commentary on the works I receive as well as suggestions on how to improve, should the work need it and compliments on insightful parts and twists to the plot. As a policy, I will offer to do spelling and grammar checks on the fanfic should the author wish to have me do so.

On the question of characters being OOC? I am very open to this as long as there is a valid reason for them to be OOC.

Flaws that really annoy me:
Bad grammar. Really really bad grammar. The kind where people don't use quotation marks. I'll forgive you if you're French, because they use">> <<" for that.
Fics that use other languages then don't include a glossary at the end
Stupid, made-up characters who end up stronger than the original Slayers Characters
Common spelling mistakes. Spell-check is an option people! Use it!
No editing whatsoever.
Self insertion. Please. If you must be a self-insert, be a minor character doing a cameo. Original characters CAN'T be stronger than the Slayers Cast (Unless they're the Dark Lords or the Dragon Kings themselves!)
Fics that portray me OR portray the Ryuzoku as heartless and bloodthirsty, or worse, weak. We're the foes of Mazoku for a reason. Please don't base all us Ryuzoku because of Try and Saichurouh.
Too much OOC-ness - and worse, OOC-ness that has no reason.
Characters have FLAWS. Give them FlAWS. Mine is that I can't seem to tell a joke that everyone will find funny. Shape out your characters and give them basis for WHY they're together with another. Yes, this goes even for the original Slayers.

Flaws I dislike? Bad grammar. Reaaaally bad grammar. No names, but there are a few people whose works I can't read a paragraph of without deleting. Really people! Um... I'll let you off if English isn't your first language though.... ^^; OH! And one thing I really can't stand is self insertions. Unless it's really funny, like you guys said. the ones where it's simply to get into bed with Zel or Naga or something, Or where you end up more powerful, you know? That sort of thing? Well, it bores me to death. No offense. But if you want to live out your own fantasies in the slayers world, don't make me read it, please!

As for problems that really bug me, the first and foremost is grammar and punctuation. There is an enter key. There are comma and period keys, and if you feel adventurous, you could even use *gasp!* the semicolon. There is one verb and one main subject in every sentence. Also, spelling. That's what they invented this cool little program called the spell-check for. I realize that this is a foreign concept to many of you, but try to assimilate it into your brain before I send cyber-thugs to smack you. I'll forgive you to some degree if you're not a very good English speaker, but if you aren't, you can find SOMEBODY who'll fix your problems for you for little or nothing in return. Heck, I'LL fix anything anyone wants to send me.

I also get pissed off at people who get way too OOC. I mean, in some stories, there's reasons, like in one where Zelgadis got some of Xelloss's DNA mixed up in his body and gets a weird sense of humor, but if you just have them doing something they would never do without a legit reason, that will bug me. Very badly. I won't send the IRS to your door, but understand you will get low marks in that department.

I don't really think that all humor stories have to have a plot per se; all other genres, yes, but sometimes random can be half the joke. But please have somewhere you're going with all other kinds, please.

Also, I don't like people making one single character (and I've found peeps do this to Xelloss in particular A LOT) the ultimate epitome of all that is evil. They're all dynamic characters; if you make one have the single goal of evil, you make him/her into a Disney villain with no personality.

Well, that was a lot of peeves, wasn't it? ^-^;; Just write good fics, peeps!

Pet peeves with Slayers fanfics: To start off with, I get annoyed if the author spells a lot of things wrong. There is a thing known as a spell
checker, people! Also, horribly bad grammar can become a real annoyance and takes away from the storyline. Stories that have no real introduction and just jump right into the story and never explain what's going on. Finally, there is the problem of plots that don't go anywhere. I can tolerate these things, but they are not encouraged.

I would have to say that poorly done stories bother me the most. Such as ones with over-used or loose plotlines.
