Fates Worse Than Death

There are times when death is not the only ending an adventurer will come across.  Sometimes a poor unlucky soul will come back from the dead, due to a dramatic death that was dealt to them or because of their death at the hands of an undead creature such as a vampire.  Still others meet this fate by making dark pacts with creatures beyond their understanding.  Thus far  in our journeys we have had two members meet  a fate such as that  I have described.  I was not there during that time to witness this unfortunate change but from the information gained from fellow adventurer  and companion Cyrus the Elf (formally known as Frank Ole Bob and Ethel), I can tell you that  it was horiffic.  Indead the witnessing of such horror created a sort of madness for poor Cyrus that was only recently cured by the great work of one Dr. Gregorian Illhousan.  This chapter is kept in the book of Unfortunate Circumstances to remind one that  death is sometimes a good thing.

Chapter 1
(Curse of the Shadow Elves)

Louis Teller: after traveling with the group for somtime in the accursed realm of the Shadow Elves, known as the Shadow Rift, Louis mysteriously left the party.  He seemingly turned his back on his fellow companions and left, not  giving any reasons.  This was right  after  he had done some dark  deed in the woods of Tepest and had been granted dark powers by unkown forces.  Traces of his leaving where found after the rest of the remaining group came to the surface. They found a sword of Louis' lying on the ground, one of the items that he had found while adventuring in the Shadow Rift, and a dead goblin totally drained of blood. Everyone in the party knew Louis was a half-vampire, especially with all that transpired with his father, but this was not like him. Louis only fed on bloody things when necessary and never did he feed on living beings. A message was left on the side of a vardo belonging to a half-vistani that had traveled with us there but who had mysteriously dissappeared also. The message was written in blood, we assume it was the goblins, and it was written in Louis' handwriting. The message said, "I am now cursed, I have become like my father." This message chilled us immensley and lately we have found that a cure is possible for our friend. We are searching for the components to some potion that will hopefully cure him of his affliction, although I have never known such a thing to work and if it did, it would probably only work on poor Louis.

Amish Priestly:Amish Priesly also met a fate worse than death on journey into the Shadow Rift. Seeing that so many of our company was hurt or killed or worse on this adventure, I now curse myself for not going. The plan, however, had not been to go to the Shadow Rift in the first place. The group was escorted through the mists by Jonathon, a priest of Ezra and a friend of mine. The trip through the mists was taken to shorten down time. The group had originally planned on only going to Nova Vassa, to seek the aid of Dr. Illhousan. The group that I suggested be called "The Nightstalkers" is a noble one and one that seeks to do good, even when it is out of there way. They generously devoted their skills to seek a way to return the people of Briggdarrow. The heroic men of the Nightstalker made good on their aid to the town, but with a lot of loss. It was while down in the Shadow Rift, seeking aid for these people, when Amish met his end. That part of his life will be found in the death parts of the Unfortunate Circumstances, his tale did not end there, however. After falling off the magic carpet that belongs to Cyrus, Amish's body was crushed, and then to add further ignoblement to his death, one of the more warlike types of the Shadow Elves that fell with him crawled over and savagly ripped at his throat. The elf must have acted out of bloodlust and hatred, but anyway, Cyrus valiently slayed the creature with his magical enchanted elvish blade and that was that. Or so we thought. At this point, seeing the horrible death of his companion and the brutal way the Shadow Elf defiled his dead body, Cyrus started going mad. Cyrus' mind fragmented into several personalities, according to Dr. Illhousan, and Cyrus claimed to see ghosts. He saw both the ghost of Amish and the elf that killed Amish. Strangely though, all of us could see the spirit of Amish. The spirit followed us and helped us, trying to keep its good nature until we found a time when a priest could restore him to life. Before such a thing could happen though, the negative energy took over poor Amish and made him kill an innocent person that lived in seclusion in the Shadow Rift. Amish turned evil on that spot and left the group, forever to remain in the Shadow Rift.
