The Cord 812

( hey! What's a Grognard section without some mention of the car...? )*wink*

the cord 812, 1937 model

Ah... theC.C.C. Presently the only 'lady' in Grognard's life , this is the set of wheels that often gave our Inspector and Sargent ( as well as the bad guys ) a real run for their money! When it's not busy acting as the getaway vehicle for our Caped Casanova, it is busy tailing after Karst and his cronies. Yes people. I'm talking about the Cream Colored Cord. To be more specific, THE CORD 812. And the photo you see above IS indeed a 1937 Cord 812 model ~ the very model that Grognard drives. AND it's even in the right color! (In the cartoon that is, not in the pic you see here.) It may not be in every single episode, but the car's been through quite a lot with our Grognard and Lupin, so it kinda grows on you. In a rough track record, it has 1) Chased after a train 2) been dropped from a crane. 3) been 'hijacked' more than once and 4) Flew over a steep cliff * thanks to Grognard tampering with the engine i believe...* and these are the ones I CAN remember off hand. Yep. It's lifeis almost as exciting as Lupin's himself, but one wouldn't be surprised at all!

Ac-'Cord'-ing To The Facts... ( *pun intended heh heh heh..)

The Cord 812 was the creation of Erret Lobban Cord, a young American entrepreneur. He acquired Auburn in1924 and Duesenberg in 1927 ( car manufacturing companies) . His initial creation in 1929, the FF-type "Cord L- 29" didn;t quite take off, and production was discontinued. However Cord went on and produced more designs and in the year 1935, The Cord 812 was born!*whoo hoo! :)*

The styling of the Model 812 was very distinctive, even among the many singular designs of the day. It featured an enormous front fender to accommodate the manually retractable headlights, a long boxy hood which earned this model the nickname "Coffin", and a grille wrapping around to lower side of the hood. The Model 812 also employed front- wheel front drive, which was uncommon in the United States. Because of the longitudinally mounted engine with the trans-axle in front, the car had an electro-mechanical vacuum-shift gearbox. All this is good to know, but what you really have to LOVE about the cord just has to be that foldable rooftop for those romantic car rides after 'working hours' .. Nice . :)

And with such a great driver like Grognard behind the wheel, you can bet that they make a perfect combiation of speed and accuracy ...well unfortunately, after many narrow 'escapes' the cord finally bit the dust in the last episode(* Epi#26: " to catch Lupin" ) when Mayhem hijacked and crashed it.*See why poeple are particular over who drives their cars? ;)* That was bad enough but then Grognard was left to drive ....*oh the HORROR!* Mayhem's PINK one!!!! Well the only comfort I suppose is that he gets to run snow over Mayhem...heh heh heh *SPLAT!*

But not to worry, knowing Lupin and Grognard, they'll have a new 812 purring on the streets faster than you can say, "The Cream Colored Cord drives Karst's Cronies Crazy ". After all, Arsne and Grognard still have lots of 'mileage' to go, and the Cord 812 is most ceratinly a classic that will never go out of style.
