Upgrades

Well, the Doctor said as he brushed off his hands, what do you think?

The Brigadier blinked. What, he finally said, exactly, is that supposed to be?

The Doctors grin of pride grew. That, my dear Brigadier, is currently the fastest, smartest, and most powerful computer on the face of this Earth. Though I would be careful if I were you; technology like that wont be available on this planet for another fifty years.

The Brigadier continued to stare at the overly shiny and streamlined thing that was once his computer. I fear to ask this, Doctor, he said, but what did you do to it, exactly?

The Doctor shrugged as he patted the machine affectionately. Just the very basics. More memory, audio and video recording, touch screen, malevolent security measures-

Malevolent security measures? He had a terrible feeling of foreboding about this.

Oh yes. The computer will recognize you and allow you and only you to access its files and programs. In the event that someone else tries to hack into it, the computer will render the perpetrator unconscious via an electric shock and will self-destruct. I suggest that you back up everything onto a disk.

The Brigadier closed his eyes and slowly counted backwards from ten. When he opened his eyes again he tried to explain, as calmly as he could, that computers were meant to be simple machines meant for storing information. Not, despite what people in the future may say, a deadly weapon.

Thats hardly a weapon, Brigadier, the Doctor countered. Thats called being prepared for anything.

Sighing in defeat, the Brigadier tried to ignore the headache that was beginning to throb. And all I wanted was my keyboard fixed, he muttered.
