The Kingston Trio

"For me, the singing of "Tom Dooley" every night is not just the repetition of a song, but a devotion to a concept known as The Kingston Trio." - George Grove.

More than three decades after "Tom Dooley" changed American popular music forever, the original Kingston Trio sound is back with Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and George Grove.

The Kingston Trio was one of Lindsey's earliest influences. According to Lindsey, "All of my style came from listening to records. I started at six or seven, and I didn't take any lessons. And the Trio was a really accessible group. Not only to get a song sensibility, but to continue developing my guitar playing." - from Songwriters on Songrwring.

The Kingston Trio was formed in 1957 by founding members Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard. Concentrating on the tradition of folk music, they used only acoustic guitars and banjos, while singing simple melodic verses. They revolutionized popular music, and reinvented the term "folk music," with the release of "Tom Dooley," in 1958, which became the group's first number one hit. The stage was set for such artists as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Peter, and Paul & Mary.

In 1961, Dave Guard left the group and was replaced by John Stewart, until he left to pursue a solo career in 1967. Additionally, Bob and Nick also left the Trio to pursue individual careers.

In 1972 the Kingston Trio reformed with George Grove and Roger Gambill. They continued to produce music and tour for the next decade until the untimely death of Roger in 1985. Another member, Dave Guard, also recently passed away. Showing his admiration for the talent behind the Kingston Trio, Lindsey performs a beautiful rendition of a Kingston Trio song "All My Sorrows" on his 1992 CD, "Out of the Cradle" as a remembrance for Dave and the Kingston Trio. You can hear the influences of the Kingston Trio in the guitar work and simple melodic verses that Lindsey arranges so well.

The Kingston Trio are still touring today and enjoying success with both new and old fans and have a new album out called "Live at the Crazy Horse."

*A special thank you to George Grove for leading me in the right direction with this section!
