R'jis

Impressed at Falas Weyr

R'jis, originally Rujisat, is aged 15 Turns. He is healthy, slightly above average in height and of normal build. He is light-skinned and has straight, pale platinum blond hair that falls to his upper back, usually tied in a ponytail. His eyes are a blue-green colour. He has fairly average looks.

He is the son of dragonriders who met during a mating flight, and separated soon after. He was raised by a foster mother from young, and hardly knows his birth parents. Growing up in the Weyr, he has always been surrounded by a large extended family of other fosterlings, riders and dragons.

He is calm and even-tempered, and rarely gets angry. He takes a serious, solemn and focused attitude towards his daily work and duties. He is intelligent, quick to learn and understand new things. His favourite activity is reading books and learning new things, especially about dragons.

Finally, Rujisat was finished with the day's work, which included sweeping floors, washing dishes, putting the tithe goods in the store room and various other errands children his age were expected to perform in the Weyr. All this he has completed with his usual quiet efficiency, without shirking and whining like some other children did. He understood that everybody was expected to contribute in some way to the smooth running of the Weyr, and all this work was just part of his duty.

Still, he was glad he was finally done. After bathing and changing into a clean set of clothes, he felt refreshed. Passing by the other children on his way inside the Weyr's cavern network, he glanced briefly at them as they played a noisy game of Catch, chasing each other merrily in circles. Occasionally, on very seldom, special occasions, he would join them in their games, but not today. He continued on his way.

He reached the library and looked through the books. He had already read most of the basic information on the creation and history of the dragons and the Weyrs. Today, he decided to pick a book about fighting Thread. Nobody was likely to miss it for a while, and Rujisat was always careful to only borrow books for a few hours, and not keep them overnight.

Carrying the book, he wandered off to search for a quiet place to read, finding the library too stuffy. He settled down on the steps leading to the dining hall, currently empty at the moment, opened the book and began to read. His brown firelizard Pradoc joined him on the steps, peering at the book out of curiousity. Dinner would begin soon, so he had to read quickly.

Pradoc had gotten bored staring at the book and flown off. Rujisat barely noticed, since he was engrossed in the section dealing with all aspects of firestone. A shadow suddenly fell on the pages. Rujisat looked up to see an unfamiliar woman examining him with a curious expression. He did not recognize her.

"Yes, can I help you?" he asked politely, even though he was a little annoyed at being interrupted.

"I'm just here to look around. On Search," replied the woman. "I'm Serzona of Falas Weyr, rider of green Aphorath. She's over there." Rujisat looked in the direction she was pointing and saw a green dragon watching the Weyr children playing.

"What about you? I mean, your name and your dragons'," she continued pleasantly.

Rujisat felt slightly awkward when he replied, "I'm Rujisat, and well, no, I'm not a dragonrider. I'm not even a candidate."

Serzona looked surprised. "When I saw you reading this book I thought you were a dragonrider, even if you looked rather young. Why else would you read these textbooks?"

"I'm flattered you think I look like a rider, but I think I don't need to be a rider to read these books. I was born and raised in the Weyr, around dragons, and I just want to learn about them and what they, and the Weyr, do. Since I'm Weyrbred, I should learn more about the Weyr and the dragons."

"Very mature reasons for a boy so young," Serzona said with a smile. "I think we have a future dragonrider in the making here."

"Don't flatter me so much," Rujisat answered with a grin of his own. "I just like reading and learning, whether or not I'm Searched."

Rujisat saw Aphorath turn away from the group of children and walk towards her rider. The green dragon looked over Serzona's shoulder at Rujisat.

"Whatever you say, Aphorath and I are sure you're candidate material. Anyway, you're Searched for Falas now," Serzona said.

Rujisat blinked at her in surprise, then said the first thing that came to mind, "I need to return this book."

"And pack your things and say your farewells too. Go, but don't take too long, we're waiting," Serzona reminded him. He nodded and hurried off.
